And a Best Buy sale netted me, for $10 each, Mongol and The Wild Bunch.
Gravy,

Thanks for mentioning this. I don't own a Blu-ray player yet, but I may pick up THE WILD BUNCH while it is so inexpensive. The picture and color transfer is supposed to be a huge improvement over the special edition DVD.

Cheers,
Ignatz

Arrived today: a screener of VCI's very first Blu-ray release, A Christmas Carol (1951) Special Edition. Watched the first 20 minutes or so; looks awesome. Very nice job. Will report further later.

Oh, yeah, and I got Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, too.

Watched the North By Northwest Blu-Ray last night. Now this is one of my personal top ten movies and I have seen it numerous times, or at least I thought I had. The Blu-Ray is just so much sharper and clearer than any presentation (including on a theater screen) that it was like a whole new movie. For one, the increased clarity shows that the Mt Rushmore set is not nearly as phony looking as it has appeared on all the laserdisc and DVD versions I have seen. The added clarity and crispness brings out details that make the prop presidential faces seem a lot more realistic than they have looked before. The DVD Savant review had noted the same thing but I found that hard to believe until I saw it with my own eyes. The Bernard Herrmann score and overall sound are also clearer than I have ever heard.

DeepDiscount is selling the entire original Prisoner TV series on Blu-Ray for $39.99. That's 60% off the MSRP.

I'm very tempted to get Blu Ray now. The problems with the machines made me pull back, but looking at you guys, it seems like the problems have passed. Now, there is a new problem: the HDTV. My dad has one and it overheats badly. Where it will be situated on my shelf unit when I get one, there are DVDs above it. I'm afraid that it might do damage to them.

Silly, ain't I?! I can easily afford them, and they look so good in Asda at £15 each or 2 for £20. I was creaming myself at buying them, more so when I saw Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. :D

My HDTV doesn't get warm. Must just be that particular model.

Still not upgrading to Blu Ray though.

An HDTV shouldn't get that hot. Is the set adequately ventilated? Most HDTVs have different ventilation requirements than the old CRT-based sets. You need somewhat greater clearance above and to the sides but less to the rear. Check the owner's manual for the requirements for a particular unit.

As long as the shelf above the TV is at least 8 to 10 inches above the top of the set and of reasonable thickness, there should be no problems.

Warner has just started a program for U.S. customers to upgrade DVDs you own to Blu-Ray. The cost is $7.95 to $9.95 per disc plus $4.95 shipping per order. This may or may not be a bargain depending on what you can find the discs for at the discounters. You can check it out at www.dvd2blu.com.

Disney has a plan where they will send you a $10 off coupon to upgrade your existing DVDs (or even VHS tapes!) to Blu-Ray.

As a guy who once owned a Betamax, I have a wait and see policy on all new technology. Blu-ray is coming on quite slowly -- it's nothing like the LP revolution -- and I'm not a believer yet. The problem with selling the system is, I think, that women as a rule don't care about image quality. They watch TV for content, not film technique; and nothing appeals to them about HD or Blu-Ray. They see buying a new player and all-new DVDs as a colossal waste of money (and that's something I can understand, being retired on a fixed income). Those of you who are still raking in the sheckels, enjoy your Blu-Rays; the rest of us will probably rermain in the Stone Age until we're forced to change horses.

Well, Mark Evanier is convinced that each new step forward in technology is solely created for one and only one purpose: to force him to upgrade his copy of GOLDFINGER over and over and over...

I already did mine. It is also an excuse to force me to upgrade my copies of "North by Northwest", "Dumbo", and "The Wizard of Oz" and a couple of dozen others. Ah, the joys of collecting and being a perfection freak!
