This year's colossal boxed DVD set may not come from Fox at all; Criterion is releasing AK 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa on December 8 for a heftly $399, although Amazon's preorder prices is a hundred bucks cheaper. The set includes 25 films and a big-ass book.

The Bad Sleep Well (1960)
Dodes'ka-den (1970)
Drunken Angel (1948)
The Hidden Fortress (1958)
High and Low (1963)
I Live in Fear (1955)
The Idiot (1951)
Ikiru (1952)
Kagemusha (1980)
The Lower Depths (1957)
Madadayo (1993)
* The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail (1945)
* The Most Beautiful (1944)
No Regrets for Our Youth (1946)
One Wonderful Sunday (1947)
Rashomon (1951)
Red Beard (1965)
Sanjuro (1962)
* Sanshiro Sugata (1943)
* Sanshiro Sugata, Part II (1944)
Scandal (1950)
Seven Samurai (1954)
Stray Dog (1949)
Throne of Blood (1957)
Yojimbo (1961)

Me too. A great set but beyond my means, and besides, I already have 17 of 'em and don't regret buying even one except Rashomon, which has never struck my gong. I'd love the book, but time will change this silly price. My guess, the Murnau-Borzage set didn't make money for Fox and the Hawks set won't happen. Sad if true, but after all Fox is ultimately Rupert Murdoch and his MBAs. Swine, in other words.

Me too! 'Course, I already have a number of these from Criterion, which makes the set even more of an expense. I hope that we shall be able to buy individual films at some point in the future.

I'm hoping there will be some around next March when DeepDiscount's next extra 20% (or sometimes 25%) sale comes around. That will get the cost of this down to close to half the original price and it may be within range.
