I think Gravy is asking us to describe the adjustments we'd like to see. |

I voted make adjustments. Have a seperate area for political threads/posts, other than in the polling section. No exceptions for making political slants on the other media areas. |

Well, politics is always a volatile subject... but we've had problems with other subjects leading to bad feelings. It's when someone attacks other members (either generally or specifically) simply because their opinions don't jibe with the person making the attack. A recent example might be Thad contending that those of us who enjoyed FAMILY GUY had pre-pubescent tastes. I don't think that particular rant will result in any ill will, 'cause Thad is Thad & I believe we all take that into consideration. But you get the idea. I mean, we lost one member because of... Chuck Berry! What can be done about it? I honestly dunno!! |

We lost a member because of Chuck Berry? Really? Who was that? I find Family Guy unfunny and stupid, but I've only seen it 2 or 3 times. Maybe I saw really, really unfunny and stupid episodes. Although I doubt it. Chuck Berry ROCKS, though, don't he? About politics... rant all ya want to, but NOBODY is gonna change anybody's mind, so what is the point, exactly? |

I think political debates (all right, arguments) can be fun and educational as long as you talk ideas and avoid calling names. My best friend in high school and I argued politics constantly but it never messed up our friendship because we never made it personal nor did we do any name calling. I think we both learned a lot about different political ideas and why we each held the ideas we did. If we could do that here, I wouldn't mind politics being a subject as long as it didn't become the dominant one--personally, I'd rather talk about movies and music. If there can be a policy forbidding ad hominem attacks and it is enforced (with banishment, maybe), it could work. That just might be too much work for Gravy or Large Marge or whoever, though. I would certainly never turn my back on other Balconeers because I didn't like their politics but I might not like you if you were mean and nasty. The only people who I would dislike for their politics would be those who advocated outright hatred and violence. That is intolerable in anybody's politics. |

I think it's fairly obvious. People who constantly introduce strident political views into non-political conversations, no matter how inappropriate the venue, feel some need to trumpet what they view as their own moral superiority. Hence the self-righteousness that accompanies most such exchanges. I'm not in favor any top-down constraints on expression here, political or otherwise. Having said that, I think we could do a better job of policing ourselves and resist adding provocative political opinions to discussions of movies -- especially when said opinions are designed not to advance the conversation but merely get a rise out of dissenters whom the offending poster is deliberately trying to tweak. There's way too much of that on internet message boards. On a board devoted to movies, we ought to be able to debate the merits of CAINE MUTINY without turning the discussion into a referendum on McCarthyism. In a perfect world...er, Balcony, posters would confine provocative political observations to specifically earmarked Rant Room threads. And those of us likely to take offense to said observations would have the good sense to stay away from those threads at the risk of elevating their blood pressure for no good reason. But perfection is impossible to achieve, so that puts us pretty much back where we started. |

I agree with RR. I learned to just quit reading the political rant threads, but it upsets me to discover imagined right wing conspiracies in the middle of Stony's John Wayne poll and elsewhere they add nothing to the thread topic. |

here is the original post that started it all. I think the rants broke out of this section of the Balcony and migrated to other threads. From Gravy's original post about a RANT area: This area was intended for some simpling polling, but a thread has broken out with some rants in it. I started to read 'em, but then thought.... Why not make this the unmonitored area of the site? So, while I'll continue to post polls which cannot be posted onto, the rest of you are free to post and vent about whatever you'd like. I trust you to act like adults, which means if stuff upsets stop reading it. If something personally malicious breaks out, or racist/sexist/hate posts come up (which I doubt), or people link to inappropriate outside sites, please email it to me and I'll bring it to Large Marge's attention, but a general rule of thumb is, if you're sensitive, don't post or read here. So anyway, we're going to give this a try. I thought about giving non-registered members access to this area, but frankly this is still a movie message board, and if you want to rant about the high cost of coffee, earn the right by arguing about One Body Too Many first. Mmmkay, you're on your own. Don't talk about me when I'm gone! I would like to add that I'd still like to see the polls seperate from the rants/political comments. Somebody wants a political poll, thenthey can start it in the Rant section. Edited by Stony Brooke da Mesquiteer, Sep 22 2009, 11:04 AM.

I'm tired of the ill-will that the current political climate is creating. There is no grey area anymore, and if you don't agree with someone on either side, you've got a fairly good chance of them flipping out on you. I don't like it. It seems very wrong to me. If I wanted political debate, I'd go to a political message board. I'm here because I want to talk about old movies. I'd rather it not be discussed at all (what was it folks used to say about discussing politics and religion?), but if it must, I'd rather it stay in it's proper place. Honestly, though, if it's allowed here, it'll start creeping into other places again. I kind of consider the rant section to be a failed experiment. |

That was The Batman, and he left because he, and some fun-filled posters, were referred to as "idiots". Ring a bell? Ding dong... Prickosity Poll calling.
I ain't buying it. Perfection may not be attainable, but we can make changes to the status quo. We can report (I direct your attention to the report button below my post) abusive behavior to the Webmaster, along with our comments. This is an anonymous (except to the Webmaster) option. This was a vibrant site, with many posters on at one time, as evident by the "67 posters on a one time in Sept '07" that is proudly displayed near the bottom of the main page. Maybe Gravy needs an assistant, someone who's fair and even-keeled in temperment. Even though this is Gravy's site, we can still make a change. Either that or we can continue to drop posters, and that shouldn't be an option for thode of us who truly enjoy coming here. Aw hell, I gotta go again, my daughter is in a play at the high school in a hour. |

Two things. First, if I called somebody an idiot, you have to consider th' source. Second: if you can't appreciate CHUCK BERRY, greatest songwriter in the history of rock & roll music, well... get used to scorn! |
