This Broadway show sort of fell through the cracks. It was written by Leonard Bernstein, Adolph Green and Betty Comden as a star vehicle for Rosalind Russell, and the tag "star vehicle" almost sunk its reputation, until Sir Simon Rattle took it on the road in 2003 with Kim Criswell and Audra Macdonald. They recorded in in London and then made a DVD in Berlin, which is what I finally caught up with last night, the first time I heard the score since I was 12 and too young for it.

A sensational show, even without the dialogue. Witty songs: if the only Leonard Bernstein score you know is West Side Story, you're in for a happy surprise. Criswell is extremely funny and Macdonald is ravishing as usual, but Rattle is the real star, with a little help from the Berliner Philharmoniker. Of the half dozen standout songs, my favorites are "It's Love" and "Conga," both of which get a reprise at the end, and in the last scene the respectable audience dissolves into chaos, conga-ing all over the place and turning the stuffy concert hall into a wild and wooly party.

I'll give this delight of a DVD five stars -- I've never seen a better DVD of a Broadway score.

PS -- I've already watched it four times. I think I'll pop it in again right now.
