Yesterday I heard from Sony's Mike Schlesinger, who's been working as a consultant on DVD collections of vintage Columbia films. He informed me that the long-bandied-about Buck Jones box set is now definitely scheduled for release next year. Even more interestingly, the homevideo division is weighing the possibility of bringing out box sets of Tim McCoy, Ken Maynard, and Charles Starrett Westerns. Mike asked me for title recommendations, which I sent him today. He's solicited the advice of a few other B-Western aficionados as well.

There's no way of knowing if these other box sets will ever see the light of day, but the mere fact that Sony execs have asked for outside recommendations indicates that they're at least seriously considering the possibility.

Thanks, RR for the good news!

I'll jump on any official Sony "B-western" release the minute they're announced. (Fingers crossed!)

I'd be interested in finding out what titles you suggested.

Wonderful news. Buck Jones was a powerful force for good behavior, good manners, and good humor. I wish we had him now. Will Rogers wouldn't hurt either. I hope Universal follows suit -- a good print of The Red Rider would be cause for rejoicing.
