Just watched this for about the tenth time. I still think it's the best New Wave picture by a mile. Beautiful stars, beautiful music, beautiful photography and a story with more twists and turns than a rattlesnake. Jeanne Moreau's Catherine perfectly embodies everything about women that men find perplexing, and she perplexes the living heck out of the three guys in the story. That's all I'm telling. It's a great part, and she tears down the house with it. Oscar Werner is extremely good as her long-suffering German husband, too. This movie taught me a lot about life at a young age. All kinds of awful things happen, but the mood remains lyrical and upbeat. When you love a movie at seventy that you loved at twenty, you can be pretty sure it's either a good movie or you're seriously warped; and I venture to say it's a good movie. I think it was jazzy who said he didn't like New Wave flickers, and I ask him to try this one. The Georges Delerue score alone makes it worthwhile. |

Thanks Paul, I've been meaning to see this film, but I've not pulled the trigger yet. Of course, I can't seem to post nowadays without typing something silly, so here goes... Paul, I want you to return to your humble southern upbringing, and revisit your title of this thread... "Jules et Jim", or any Balconeer can recall The Grapes Of Wrath, Huck Finn, or probably The Beverly Hillbillies and see what I mean.
