While I am sure that ignorance is bliss, I have read some of the comments on Mr. Grood- and they seem harsh- theft , deception, paranoia, bad breath - Wow! I am a bit confused how one person can generate such vitriol based on what I assume is an Internet relationship. Can, and will, anyone explain? |

Just wonder why Grood keeps coming up with new projects when he has a multitude of ones he's never finished (maybe never started). |

Fulfilling your obligations may be honorable, but it doesn’t generate buzz. |

By his own recent admission, it's strictly a matter of money. In a particularly vitriolic screed sent via e-mail some months ago to one of the many disaffected Squadron members, Grood confessed that his involvement with serials is no longer a hobby, it's a business. Since he doesn't have widespread distribution and therefore can't count on selling more than a couple hundred copies of any individual title, the only way he can keep making money is to release as many different serials as he can get his hands on. Since he limits himself (mostly) to public-domain titles, his frequent tinkering with the films is a way of making available to serial fans something different, in the hope of persuading them to buy additional copies of serials they already own. Once upon a time he could raise a big chunk o' dough with one of his pledge drives. But I think that train has finally left the station; Squadroneers have become wary of advancing money for "restoration" projects (like THE MASKED RIDER, THE HOPE DIAMOND MYSTERY, and DRUMS OF FU MANCHU, to name just a few) that never materialize. Therefore, he's got to keep pumping out new releases to maintain some cash flow. I suspect he'd be a lot happier -- and not have lost so many friends -- if he'd remained a serial hobbyist and left the entrepreneurial ventures to others. Instead, he now devotes way too much time and bandwidth to taking thinly veiled jabs at former comrades he feels have betrayed him: the rhetorical equivalent of clicking ball bearings and muttering about strawberries. |

If there's one thing I told him more than anything else, it was that he was no businessman. Beyond that, though, his pettiness and nuttiness have alienated much of his own market. |

LG, The former Squadroneers that RR has eluded for the most part have taken a wait and see approach to his latest effort, i.e. The Lone Ranger. Had Grood not chased off the people who supported him for so many years we would have been lining up to acquire his latest serial, but instead like RR said he's clicking his ball bearings and complaining about strawberries. Instead of the insane diatribe that fills up his page on The Lone Ranger project, why didn't he just post, "Until now, only a print of The Lone Ranger with burned-in Spanish subtitles and Spanish credits has been available, and various attempts have been made to make that more palatable to viewers by recreating the original credits and using digital tricks to remove the Spanish subtitles. We've located a rare print of the serial, nearly complete, that had been dubbed into French but had no subtitles. We've married the French print with the Spanish print's soundtrack (which is in English) to give a better presentation of this key Republic serial than has ever been available before." And THEN, Dr. Grood, shut the fuck up, don't insult your potential customers, and sell some serials, asshole. Sheesh. |

I'm not buying any more Serial Squadron releases. I paid for The Masked Rider, waited 3 years to get anything, and got an imcomplete release and will probably never see another chapter of that. So I'll pass this and every future time... |

I'm with Rog. Cheat me once, shame on you. Cheat me twice, shame on me. I'm not sending any more money to a raving, unpredictable looney. |

I never got Beatrice Fairfax and I paid for that three years ago. When I e-mailed Stedman, twice, I was ignored. Wish I could have my Paypal account refund my money. All I could do was report him to Paypal for fraud. To me, I won't buy anything that bears the name Serial Squadron unless someone sold me a copy so I wouldn't have to support him. That's how I got the Tailspin Tommy serial. Wonderfest in KY had a vendor selling copies of SS releases. I bought three and only TOMMY was worth keeping. |

Ah. You're one of those longtime collectors that considers everything that isn't a "pristine mint condition original" to be junk, aren't ya??!?!? |

Nope. I understand that some of the films out there will never be drop dead gorgeous. When I attend western film festivals, I overhear the older crowd constantly nit-picking. God, if it had a logo in the corner, they don't want it. If it was film chained from 16mm, they don't want it. If it isn't complete with original teasers for next week's episode, they don't want it. Me? I'd rather have something than nothing. Cliffhanger serials are my favorite and I upgrade every chance I get. In some cases, I bought more than a dozen copies of the same serial from various sources. My only complaint is "altering" a print -- that is, adding the words "copyright by Eric Stedman" on the very center of the screen on the opening of each and every chapter. Riddlerider once stated that there is a difference between a restoration and an alteration. Alteration is a no-no. Restoration is a plus. Even a straight transfer from a 16mm print is okay with me, and I don't always ask for restorations. By the way, Beatrice Fairfax was mailed to me. Apparently Stedman or someone at Serial Squadron saw my posting and sent me the DVD. I have not had time to watch it yet, but seeing that SS has the only existing print, my hope is that they did not alter the film. Tweak it, color tint it, don't care. Just hoping they didn't alter it by putting stuff on the center of the screen such as stated above. |

Presumably if there's something wrong with owning things, there's nothing wrong with ripping people off. Now I understand that Grood's releasing the rest of The Masked Rider in his so-called magazine, which means that if you already paid for it, you get to pay for it again. I guess he thinks it serves us right for believing in him in the first place. He'll show us who's the boss of the serial world. And by the way, the most jarring thing about The Lone Ranger is that parts of the soundtrack were lost, and were dubbed in by non-actors with strong Southern California accents, which don't match the other, trained voices even slightly. Grood's "fix" can't fix that. Even if he uses his own actors to re-dub, they'll have that atrocious South Jersey-Northern Pennsylvania accent that ruins Todd's serials. |

Having never checked out the SS web-site, but having read the comment reprinted "if you can get your head out of the stratosphere, though, and back enough into reality" is a bit rude. Glad I am not the only person who doesn't think highly of S.S. |
