I remember Soupy from game shows, but I can't recall his TV show that's been hilited on the news today. The show looked like it was a blast... A pie in the puss blast! |

I can't say I was a huge Soupy fan but I do love the story about his door. Soupy would open a door on his show and behind it would usually be some celebrity. One day the show's crew set it up so that when Soupy opened the door there was a totally nude woman behind it. Well, this broke Soupy up completely. I have seen this segment preserved from the show (maybe it's on Youtube?). You don't really see the woman but you do see Soupy breaking up. It was hilarious. |

The naked lady scene I think is on one of the Soupy DVDs. It shows exactly what he seen when he opend the door. A nice pair! Sam |

Soupy’s show was on WNEW Channel 5 in NY in the mid-sixties and I watched every night. As I recall it was an hour of sketches interrupted by the usual procession of Channel 5 WB cartoons and maybe serial chapters. A large part was priceless bits with the unseen Frank Nastase (who has received no credit in the obits that I’ve noticed) at the door portraying Black Tooth and White Fang with hand puppets and suggestive grunts. Plus all the pies and assorted walk-ons. I don’t remember any surprise woman at the door, but I do recall Soupy’s invitation to send in those 20 dollar bills and his subsequent banishment. Great show, at least in memory. |

Gee, I expected a heckuva lot more activity on this thread. Perhaps many of you are just too young… or maybe a lot of his programs were only carried locally or… ??? Actually, even after reading up a bit on him, I’m still not sure I fully understand the dynamics of his career. I obviously have no first-hand knowledge of how he went over in Detroit. But, in the early 60’s he was huge out here in L.A. He ran in the early evening kiddie hours (5:00 or 5:30… don’t remember which), but his following was as adult & as rabid as it had been for “Time for Beany” ten years earlier. Stars (including Sinatra) queued up to appear on his program & get a pie in the face. Despite this, his program lasted less than 3 years. Why? Quien sabe??? Well, if you ain’t familiar with Soup, any sampling of him HAS to include a pie, White Fang & Pookie singing “Mumbles.” Here’s all three: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJfuWhMQ3Tc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcb87xi8cVg&feature=related Enjoy!! |

I "met" Soupy a few years ago at FOTR. He was in a wheel chair and unable to speak. I was a lot sadder about that than I was his passing, unfortunately. |
