I first enjoyed Ballantine on McHale's Navy, but over the years saw him on tv variety shows and some of his club act on HBO. Really enjoyed his work. His "magic that doesn't work" act was unique. The HBO show was later was released on vhs as "The Young At Heart Comedians" with numerous other acts like Henny Youngman, George Gobel, Shelly Berman, Jackie Vernon and others. What made this extra unique is the camera would cut backstage where the comedians were waiting to go on and would just riff with each other. Henny came across as a star quick wit. |

Favorite trick: He'd cut a short rope into two pieces and drop them in a hat. Later he's come back, pull out the rope and the other half would be dangling a few inches below, courtesy of a thread. Ballantine would drop them back in the hat, saying "not done yet." |
