What is YOUR pick for DVD of the Month, eh? Last month, Snow White was the fairest of them all. As usual, see these and other DVD and Blu-ray releases at http://www.inthebalcony.com. |

There's a lot of great stuff this month (for a change) and I wanted to vote for 4 or 5. Finally picked the Columbia Noir set. Tough voting this month. Won't be surprised to see a tie. |

I went with Wings Of Desire. I saw the trailer yesterday on the Criterion site, and thought it looked interesting, although I agree that there are many good choices this month. I'd like to see the Zorro show, 'cause I last saw it when I was pre-teen, and I recall liking it. |

I am so sick and tired of reading about how "classic movies" aren't being put on DVD any more. LOOK at that list. Holy shit! And that's not even counting the Warner or Turner Archives DVDs. |

Yeah, but some of them are being revisited on DVD for the umpteenth time. |

Tough choices but I had to go with the zippy Zorro. But I'm definitely buying the noir set and the stooges as well. |

"Yeah, but some of them are being revisited on DVD for the umpteenth time." Sort of. We live in a digital age, and things that can be done now simply couldn't be done even a few years ago. Gone with the Wind's first DVD release was perfectly fine, the second one was much improved, and the new one will probably blow them both away. Five years from now, or three, or two, there may be some new technology that will blow THIS one away. I'm telling you, the new release of Wizard of Oz is so incredible I felt that I'd never even seen the film before. On a kind of related note, listen to one of the Beatles' CDs from the 1986 releases and then listen to the same thing from the 2009 release and you'll hear what I'm talking about. |

"If anyone ever questions the improvement that Blu-ray can manifest over DVD when it comes to classic films, North by Northwest may now be considered the poster child for what is possible, even overshadowing the admirable previous Blu-ray examples of The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Wizard of Oz, and Casablanca." - Barrie Maxwell, The Digital Bits "Warners' 50th Anniversary Blu-ray of North by Northwest is going to be snapped up by home theater fanatics eager to see the improvement. That DVD from 2000 was highly praised, and does the new Blu-ray really amount to a significant improvement? The answer is yes. NxNW had suffered from leeched color and excessive grain before that Lowry DVD, and we were all carried away by colors that popped and the film's overall bright tone. But perhaps some of the color was overdone. Cary Grant's perpetual suntan was so pumped that he seemed to glow from within, like a Halloween pumpkin. The new Blu-ray subdues the colors somewhat and adds more image stability and much more sharpness. Those static storyboarded cornfield shots really seem locked down now. Because HD format has a wider range of dark and light, dark scenes can be allowed to darken yet still have gradations in the blacks -- giving much more richness to night scenes. The effects come off better than ever." - The DVD Savant |

For once the Columbia film noir classics are all real classics (even if they aren't all noirs), so I went with them. Five of the most powerful movies of the postwar period -- what Columbia did best. I'll probably get the Colbert set too, just to have Bluebeard's Eighth Wife, a Lubitsch picture with Gary Cooper that's never been available on home video. |

This is a tough one. I remember watching the Jerry Lewis show back in the 60's as much as I could, and really liking it. It's where I learned the "One hen, two ducks" memory test. Don't know if I could still recite it but it was riot watching Jer do his thing with it. Also like the Columbia noirs, Zorro, Buck Rogers, Stooges & NNW. |

Zorro. I'll definitely get Buck Rogers. But since Buck Rogers will be an improvement on a watchable print I voted for Zorro which isn't previously available or at least previously available in B&W. |
