I know, I know. For the umpteenth time - I'm gonna see METROPOLIS tomorrow night. But, I've taken the 2nd half of tomorrow off of woik as well and I'm gonna make it a double feature. I'm gonna have a numb ass. I said NUMB ass! WINTER'S BONE won the "Favorite Movie Shown Award" at the Sundance Film Festival this year. I'll call this double feature: Ozark Bourgeoisie. Oh yeah. Wanna see the trailer? Sure ya do.... WINTER'S BONE Yeeeehaw. ![]() |

WHEW! What a GREAT day. The additional footage to METROPOLIS makes this a different film. You are in for a treat Clifford. Panzer emailed me and said the found footage was "scratchy", and that's an understatement, but one can easily tell which scenes are added because of the scratches. I find it amazing that some of these scenes were omitted, and what a slap in the face the cuts were to Lang's vision of the film. Someone, way back when, should've been drawn and quartered for making the cuts. Some of the unearthed scenes enhanced the film for thrills: the underground workers chasing Maria through Metropolis' streets and how they confused her with the robotic Maria; also the fight scene between the mad scientist and Freder. The flood scenes are also enhanced for suspense, as well as an omitted obstacle for the children and the 3 heroes to face before they escape the flooding underground. Seems that an entire portion of the plot was cut: The Thin Man no longer stands around with his finger in his arse (and that's a really good thing). Alas, there seems to be 2 portions of the film still "lost": An eavesdropping by Freder's father, resulting in a fight between he (or is it him?) and the scientist; a prophetic sermon given by a clergyman, that forsees the rise of a woman riding snakes, abbetted by the 7 Deadly Sins. There are a few scenes that only last a couple of seconds, and those scenes are just window dressing, but there are some that made me wonder why they were cut at all, for example: after the escape from the flooded undergound, Freder turns and speaks. To whom? I thought it was to the group that had just escaped, but he's actually talking to an exhausted Maria, as she's lying on the ground. A strange cut indeed. I sure am glad that I never bought this film, 'cause it would've been one of those double dips.. Now is the time for a purchase... Make mine Blu-Ray please. |

I'm glad you enjoyed the new version, Stony, but if everyone had that attitude about silent films (waiting for the ultimate cut) then nothing would get released because there wouldn't appear to be a market for it. No one likes to double-dip, but I have enjoyed my DVD version of METROPOLIS that up until now had been the definitive version. And I will enjoy the new version even more, when I support it through my DVD or (hopefully) Blu-Ray purchase. |

Excellent point, Mr. Bat. There is more footage to lots of silent films, but not enough money to get it to the public, because support for the silents has been so pathetic. Metropolis is the great exception. It has made more money in the last 50 years than any other silent, and yet only now do we see it restored. Chaplin and Lloyd took care of most of their stuff, but the rest...well, put it this way: most movies, silents and talkies, have gotten shorter in my lifetime, and after my generation kicks off, it's going to get worse. You all can help: quit supporting the black market. Put your money to work where it will do some good, and let the few honest people in the business bring you these movies as they were originally intended to be. Sorry to get on the soapbox, but I'm a recent convert and I'm going to make some noise. As for Metropolis, I agree with Stony: a lot of the cuts are dumb. They left the expensive-looking footage in and cut out the story. The new version is a new and more entertaining movie. |

Oh, don't get me wrong. I don't buy films to support anything or anybody. I buy films because they are ones I want to own and watch more than once. That's it. Kudos to you guys that buy rare stuff to support a cause, and I mean that. The only monies I consciously spend to support film causes are the local theater - The Belcourt - and that's because they're local. |

And Kudos to you, for supporting your local theatre's showings of such material (I, too, mean that). But if there wasn't the home market for silent material, you probably wouldn't being seeing half the stuff at the Belcourt that you are seeing now, as these small theatre showings will not recoup the costs of the restorations. So, in a way, you are welcome, glad you enjoyed the show. |

Suggestion -- even if you aren't sure you want Blu Ray, get this one. Projected on the screen of a real movie theater it was as good as real 35mm. Imagine what it would be like on your TV (no visible lines). After I saw Metropolis at SFSFF I started buying Blu Rays even though I don't yet have a player, and won't until next Spring. Hey, they'll still play then. If you decide against Blu Ray you can always sell the thing; but you won't. |

Agree with you Panzer. Like I said earlier, if you check out THE SEARCHERS in Blu-ray, that will put an end to all doubts about switching. |

Even though a number of great releases will be coming out in November, I am placing an early bet that Metropolis will be the disc of the month for November in the voting here. |

Safe bet. It'll be my disc of the year, especially since it will have the Alloy Orchestra's score I heard in SF, with the option of using the original orchestral score played by, I think, the Berlin Philharm -- at least some full orchestra. |

No doubt about it, Jazz. BTW, Panzer, do you know someone did a documentary on Playland-At-The-Beach, and it is out on DVD. Will let you know How I like it. |
