Nevertheless they are in difficulties. The specialty film market is not brisk to say the least, and incidentally, if we must pick nits, Flicker Alley has some sort of affiliation with Lobster Films, giving it a European arm.

Sorry to say I missed the premiere of Metropolis last night but I recorded the documentary and watched it......I was surprised they gave Giorgio Morodor a bit of credit for his 1980's re-release. in fact credited him with introducing the film to a modern younger audience. |

I'm not surprised at all. Go to the Amazon review boards for the DVD and you will see a lot of people were introduced to METROPOLIS this way and they still have fond memories of it. I've never seen his version, but hey, if it gets someone to check out a silent film, it is a start. I actually wish they included his version as an extra on the new Blu-Ray, for historical interest. Maybe in the (hopefully) inevitable boxed set that will contain all versions and musical scores. |

I always liked the Morodor version (except the band Lover Boy's song) In actuality with the film historians that were involved with this undertaking of the restoration that nobody attacked Morodor for bastardizing a classic film kudos to Giorgio! |

OK, as a Canuckle Head and admitted fan of some of their songs, which one is in the film? |

The song was called "Destruction" however Loverboy was not the only song that just didn't fit there was also "On your own" by Billy Squier and "Here She Comes" by Bonnie Tyler. but then again I was never really fond of the 80's decade of music.....lol |

I thought the Moroder version was entertaining, but I don't go to the movies to not enjoy them. Metropolis with a disco score? HELL yes! |

The Documentary I saw on TCM called "Metropolis Refound" does not appear to be included in either of the releases.....what interested me about the documentary is that the Buenos Ares version actually has completely different takes in many scenes (they did a side by side comparison) plus the intertitles were translated differently......making this cut almost a version unto itself......The film museum in Argentina would love to restore their version as well. missed it on TCM so I am all juiced up for the DVD or perhaps this will be my first Blu Ray purchase... |

Foreign release negatives were constructed using alternate takes (known as B Takes), which is why the UK version of The Iron Horse is inferior to the U.S. version. Serious American collectors of what we call 'foreign' silents try to get them from the country of origin. One exception here is KINO, which uses the original A negative where possible. The most unfortunate example of a foreign print is the U.K. version of D.W. Griffith's America, which is, alas, the only one to survive. It was drastically re-edited to reflect British ideas about the American Revolution, and some of the holes are so big you could drive a truck through them. Fortunately, they don't seem to have messed up Paul Revere's ride, IMO the finest short sequence in any silent -- I always use it on people who question Griffith's art. If you don't want to invest in America, the sequence is in Kevin Brownlow's fine BBC series about Griffith, which belongs in every movie lover's collection because it has many of the best short sequences. I'll eventually write a long piece about America. The gist will be this: in Griffith's day the ideals of the revolution were still current, and it's tragic that this is the part of the film that a misadventure suppressed. It might have done something to shore up Griffith's tarnished reputation. I have a feeling that when my generation is gone, Griffith won't have many defenders: I've been vilified by countless gullible fools for defending him, and I suspect their phony take will prevail in the long run, but I'll say it here one more time: Griffith made only one film that could be called anti-Black. He also inserted one anti-Communist title into Orphans of the Storm, which looms even larger on some agendas, and there are some evil Indian characters in America. The fact remains that any serious study of Griffith's work reveals a person of good will and remarkable sensitivity, as amply proved by "A Corner In Wheat," made five years before The Birth of a Nation, and countless other Biograph shorts. If you TIVOed the Griffith shorts from TCM last week, you have beautiful prints of several of the best ones. |

There's a story somewhere of Will Rogers doing a scene with a live lion. After getting through a tense take, he announced "They ain't gonna see THAT in Europe." The Europeans DID see it, but from a dupe of the American negative. |

I watched the new Blu-ray of the restored Metropolis today; without exaggeration, it was one of the thrills of my movie-lovin' life. |
