Ahhhh, got the following straight from the author (Wiliam Patrick Maynard) of the latest Fu novel:

"According to Rohmer, the sound of drums pounding in a victim's ears is a symptom of the Green Death that Fu Manchu has unleashed. The seemingly supernatural drums are just a natural symptom of a biological agent."

Mort, do you remember years ago Rainier Ale was referred to as "The Green Death." Yeah, I had the sound of drums pounding in my head the next day after drinking a couple of cans. :D

... straight from the author (Wiliam Patrick Maynard) of the latest Fu novel:
Are the new Fu books any good? The original Rohmer series went downhill after the first few. I doubt I shall ever consider rereading any of the original Rohmers beyond number two or three, and I'm not sure anybody in the Twenty-first century could write a credible sequel.

Sarge, I agree with you about the original FU novels going downhill after the first couple, but I must admit that I really enjoyed THE SHADOW OF FU MANCHU. It's much better than it's contemporaries, IMHO.

Gee Sarge, hope you're not asking me. Fu is one of those characters you have to be introduced to when you're young for you to appreciate when you're older.

Maynard has only written one Fu book, THE TERROR OF FU MANCHU, which is advertised as the first new novel about Sax Rohmer's character in a long time. Here's a short interview with the author:

Can't remember if I ever posted this still before. Say, if anyone wants to loan me their copy of Grood's Manchu, I'd appreciate it and will return it with postage.

I have a buddy who is wondering if anyone actually got hold of Grood's Fu Manchu and if so, how does it compare to the VCI? Is it an upgrade or are we just as well off as before?

I tried to buy one and nothing happened, so I got a friend to try to get one for me, and despite his cordial relations with the Doctor, he failed too; so I quit trying. My unsupported opinion is that things are chaotic over there since Barin took his ball and went home. It seems funny that there have been few or no reviews or comments on this title except for Grood's signed puffery and raves by mysterious one-time Internet posters. Surely Dave Kehr saw the thing, if it exists at all.

It exists. I have a copy. I don't have a copy of the VCI; so, I can't compare.

I've seen it. It's sharper than the VCI edition. It's a little dark in places and the sound has some slight artifacts, but I like it better than the VCI edition.

I have a copy, and it is better than VCIs. Enough to increase my appreciation for the serial. It really is very well made.

Not sure if its true, but someone said they thought it was from a copy of the feature version shown at Cliffhangerfest, with the missing footage spliced in from the VCI version. Anyone know if that is so??

That's not right. I know the guy that owns the print Grood used for the DVD. It's a complete original print of the serial, not a featurization or condensation.

Thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't sure, just what I heard.

No problem. I understand how these things go - I've gotten many a thing wrong that way.
