No, it doesn't, mort. That's what I was trying to say before. I apologize if it's not the answer you want, but it's the correct answer. Just like the "collector to collector" bit doesn't really work. I've seen websites shut down that try that routine. Paypal and ebay have gotten tough on such sellers. Again, it's another in a long line of Grood's smokescreens.

And besides, what the hell does he mean by saying these DVDs will only be sold to people who want to study serials? Does that mean I'm supposed to right a thesis on the realism of Hambone's performance after watching DARKEST AFRICA?

Obviously, what you want to hear is that it's a perfectly legal way of doing things. I have no idea why you want to hear this. Maybe to make you feel better about yourself buying the stuff. If that's what you want to believe, go for it. Others such as myself know better. This is no such thing as a legal way to circumnavigate the copyright laws.

As for me? At my age I've realized that there's stuff I have to get on the grey market if I want to see it. However, if the stuff comes out through a legit source, I would gladly dump my grey market copy and buy the legit copy in a heartbeat. As an example:

I have an old 3D system that works pretty well (what used to be called Field Sequential). Almost every DVD I have in this format is grey market. Among the titles is Alfred Hitchcock's DIAL M FOR MURDER. It's from the old Japanese VHD disc. Warners has announced they are putting out a 3D Blu Ray of Dial M. Should they do this, I would gladly buy a 3D TV and 3D Blu Ray player for the simple purpose of upgrading this title. It helps that there's other 3D titles I will want. And should any of the others I have become available in 3D Blu Ray--KISS ME KATE for instance--I'd upgrade those. Similarly, if Paramount started putting the Republic serials on DVD, I'd dump everyone of these silly AC Comics titles and get the Paramount releases. Ditto for Sony with the Columbias.

As usual Todd, you're WAY off base.

First of all, the only REAL way to find out if it's legal is to have it approved (or disapproved) in court. I don't think that's gonna happen.

I just thought it was an interesting approach & wondered if the wording of the current copyright laws might suggest it in some way or another.

You ARE correct IF you're suggesting that I believe the current copyright laws are unfair to the public & mainly a product of the Disney Corporation (with Sonny Bono's aid, of course).

Well, mort, let me ask you this: have you ever heard of a REAL LEGAL way of circumnavigating the copyright laws?

'Cause I sure haven't. Or have you not been paying attention to the news and seeing that Megaupload was taken down and taken over by the FBI?

Hey, Pa, didn't you say you had a friend who pointed out that there was no proviso in the copyright laws to allow "orphan" films to be released without proper permission?

All laws are subject to interpretation. That's why we have a court system.

I don't understand why my curiosity about this subject seems to pique your ire. It certainly wasn't my intention.

One good thing about Grood. He seems to be the only subject that'll kick-off a discussion around here these days.

Not sure what happened, but the lively crew that used to be eager to discuss all kinds of issues has been depressingly quiet for the last six months.... or more!! Now, the only folder that seems to consistently see action is The Arcade Annex, which, unfortunately, holds absolutely no interest for me.

Have you weighed in on the William Frawley-as-an-orphan controversy yet????

Surprised no one has mentioned that Grood now wants to move the Serial Squadron goals to become more challenging and historical and preservation-oriented rather than commercially or socially-oriented.

I know how that rumor got started. It was his starring role in the lost Chaplin silent, NEW KID IN TOWN. Or was that Jackie Coogan.... or Jackie Cooper.... or Mickey Gubitosi......

OK, mort. Here's the answer you want to hear:

Grood is a wonderful person who never did a damn thing wrong in his life and is above the copyright laws. In fact, the copyright laws should not apply to anyone at all. Anyone who wants to get around the copyright laws merely needs to declare themselves to be an educational institution and that their pirated DVDs are only for the study of said pirated DVDs. Does that answer satisfy you?

What tricks? I gave you the answer you wanted since you rejected the previous answer which was the correct answer. Geez, even when you get the answer you want, you aren't happy.

OK -- If Mickey worked at his craft he could become another Bobby Blake or at least shot his girlfriend.
