From the NY Times: Criterion continues its season of releases on Aug. 10 with a collection of Josef von Sternberg silents, including “The Last Command” and “Underworld.”

It is speculated that this will be an Eclipse set. Wonder what else will be in it?

It is speculated that this will be an Eclipse set.

Which will mean no extras, just the films. Though I love a good set of extras on my Criterions, I'll make an exception in this case and pick the set up for sure.

I hope Docks of New York will be in it -- it's one of the very best silents and I've never found a bootleg. Good on Criterion; this is cool. These movies are as entertaining as any. We remember Von Sternberg for his wispy Marlene Dietrich movies, but his silents were muscular and fun. A triumph for Criterion. Panzer's highest recommendation: even if you don't have another silent in your collection, you need this.

I dunno if The Salvation Hunters will be in it: as far as I know it belongs to the Chaplin Estate, and there's a rumor that Sir Charlie burned the negative to that and Sternberg's second picture, too. We'll see.

Yep, it is Docks of New York, which makes this the silent film release of the year.

The Last Command: the first dramatic Hollywood-on-Hollywood picture;

Underworld: the first real gangster flick, and one of the best, plus

Docks of New York: shadows and tough guys, and dames, Oh my!

A dream box. Panzer's highest reccy.

Even better news, Mr P, this will be a full, numbered Criterion set (chock full of extras) and not an Eclipse release.

Rapture! I was wondering why it was so steep. This is when Sternberg was at his vey peak, and there will be lots of behind-the-camera footage, always welcome where silents are concerned.

Now, Criterion, how about a Hawks silents collection?
