I'm a glutton for punishment so I'm at least going to rent this when it comes out-- but since all the video stores around me are closing down I might even (gulp) buy it. It's been long enough since I've seen it to forget the bad parts about it. Overall, I enjoyed it. There were a couple of good parts in it. A little too much Wolf Men if you ask me, but nobody did so I won't say it. |

If you are speaking of the classic film with Lon Chaney Jr, then it is a masterpiece! If you are talking about the new one, with Benicio Del Toro, it is booooooooooring! The film, not your post. Edited by The Batman, May 31 2010, 07:33 AM.

Whew! I will buy the Blu, for the extras which look really good, but not for many, many months; when I can find it in the bargain bin (where it belongs). |

Watched EVERY Universal WOLFMAN flick yesterday (except for She Wolf of London-- which I've yet to see), one of the advantages of working at home. Even a man who is good at heart... All good. I still have a warm spot (left on the carpet no doubt) for Werewolf of London. I like Hull's makeup, and it's got a lot of interesting elements to it. I'd love to have seen a Hull Werewolf/Chaney Wolfman throwdown. |

Andy, SHE-WOLF is solid, if not spectacular. And, sorry, Chaney's canine would wipe the floor with Hull's mutt. |

It depends, I'm sure you could distract Hull with a cup of tea and Chaney with a bottle of whiskey-- so it might be more of a draw than you think. I love Chaney's Wolfman design, but he's almost cuddly-- Hull looked outright disturbing. |

I certainly agree with that, but the Hull picture is oddly archaic in direction. It doesn't work for me.

She Wolf of London had the strange feel of an uncompleted movie -- as if they never got around to shooting the part with the actual werewolf or with a detective proving there was no werewolf ("If it weren't for those meddling Victorian sleuths, I would have gotten away with it.") |

I just finished watching the Del Toro remake and I rather like it. Of course, the biggest reason why I purchased this was because of Emily Blunt. I just can't get enough of her.

I agree on the Wolfman - to a point- I watched the directors cut and if they removed about 20 minutes of the incessant dialog- i would have enjoyed it much more |

I just watched this again over the span of two days and it was pretty entertaining. The ending fight is still pretty silly, but if you compare this to WEREWOLF IN A GIRLS DORMITORY or THE WEREWOLF or other B Werewolf movies-- or even THE HOWLING or AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON it shows a lot of class. A for effort-- B- for execution. |

Sorry, Andy, I must disagree. In no way does THE WOLF MAN compare to the class and care that went into those two canis lupus classics. IMHO |

I edited the topic title for clarity... the 1941 film is called THE WOLF MAN. This one is called THE WOLFMAN. I watched the newer one last night (Blu-ray). It's not very good, but Benecio del Toro tries to channel Lon Chaney Jr., which is appreciated. I also like that there's a lot of stunts in it; a cheaper film would've gone exclusively with CGI. Emily Blunt is wasted in the Evelyn Ankers part. I watched the 16-minutes-longer "unrated version" and wondered how much of this gore wasn't in the theatrical version. An awful lot of flying guts. Also, what th' heck... Has any movie ever had so many characters or things jumping out of the dark at so many other characters or things? Heaven forbid anybody make a drinking game of that, all the players would be dead of alcohol poisoning half an hour into this thing. I watched the fun "making of" documentaries too... This is not a bad movie, interesting to monster buffs, but loud and lots of "in your face" mayhem, so be prepared. Nothing subtle here. |
