Are you planning on seeing Metropolis there, Jon?
It's like Rodney King used to say, "Can't we all get a bong."

Of COURSE. I'll be with a bunch of hard core film nuts and will be at going to every screening except Haxan, a movie that has bored me to death for the last time. I'll do thumbnails of all of 'em.

I won't be sitting through HAXAN, either, Panz. It will be the first film I have chosen to skip at the festival.

Two years ago, the closing Saturday film was THE UNKNOWN. It was very well received by the Castro crowd, as was THE MAN WHO LAUGHS, which preceded it that evening. Since then, this late-night slot has been reserved for cinema-of-the-weird, with varying results. To wit: WEST OF ZANZIBAR, THE CAT AND THE CANARY, and AELITA, QUEEN OF MARS. The audience enjoyed ZANZIBAR, another bizarre Chaney potboiler, and I shared their enthusiasm; as for the other two films--well, maybe some enjoyed them more than I did.

But HAXAN...

I first attended the festival three years ago. The closing film that Saturday night was BEGGARS OF LIFE.

Beggars of Life -- Sure! But Haxan? What were they thinking? Maybe you and I can go grab a brew somewhere, Mr. K. I know a great oyster bar right down the street from the Casto Theater, the Anchor, which is sort of a gay version of the Acme. A little cheaper and with a few fancy touches, it's still pretty much the same food. Sometimes you can get Olympias there.

Sounds good. There's also Fuzio, a slick but reasonable Italian restaurant just down the block. And a decent sandwich deli across the street.

It's so preachy, Bats. I'm sure there were lots of people who still believed in witches when it was released. and perhaps there still are, but I'm not one of them, and I find all the lecturing deadly, particularly since you get it via titles only, with long periods of precious little visual stimulation except repeats of shots used earlier. Let's just say I kinda like the first half hour, but then my enthusiasm wanes.

Those of you who will attend the festival, I'll be there with a name tag that reads Paul Panzer. I'll also have fliers for the Shasta Silent Film Festival. Gravy, hope you can make it at least on Saturday. Pa, I know you and Mr. Caplan will both be there and look forward to seeing you. Is anybody else planning to show? Mort? Chandu? Bonga? Let's make a party of it!

Fair enough, Mr P. It's been well over 15 years since I've seen it, so I'll have to give it another watch and see.
