http://classicflix.blogspot.com/2011/03/flicker-alley-laila-silent-norwegian.html Advance buzz on this picture is phenomenal, raving about photography & story. There are plans to release much more rare good stuff if this flies -- including one of those European serials we've heard rumors about for years (not by Fueillade). |

This film is showing on TCM tonight, but it's wayyyy past my bedtime... damn. The film is damn near 3 hours if my memory is working properly. |

Heck, Stony, you don't have any way to record? Your bad. There was a DVD recorder for $80 at Costco today. If you had spoke up a few hours sooner somebody (ahem) could have burned it for you -- but of course, as Mr. Nixon said, that would be wrong. |

I need to get off of my lazy butt and do something about that. TCM always shows a silent film (and usually a good 'un) late Sunday/early Monday. |

I watched part and recorded the rest -- It's an unusually beautiful movie, well-made & all the girls are pretty. God only know how many fine silents are unknown outside of their home countries. For instance, at last year's San Francisco Silent Film Festival we saw an Italian movie as good as any silent made anywhere. There may be dozens more. We've already seen great silents from Japan, but what about China? Mexico? Egypt? Poland? Spain? India? South America? It's time to start filling in these blanks. You get a free recorder with some DISH Network packages, including the HD package. I don't know how I did without it. Now I have something to watch no matter what mood. Damn sight cheaper than collecting all you want to see on DVD. If you add ROKU to your NETFLIX, then you have what amounts to a whole history of film available at no charge, whenever you want it. Plus, if a Crime Doctor series comes on, you just tape it all and after you watch each one, delete it. It'll always be on again in a year or two. I did that just recently and found I barely remembered the movies at all from two years ago. |
