A long time ago, in a kingdom far away, a little princess was born. Her mother the Queen, dying during childbirth, was saved by a magical flower that had amazing properties; the flower, however, belonged to a wicked old witch, who - in lieu of said magical flower - kidnaps the infant, who inherited the magic properties of the flower in her golden hair. The witch secretes the girl in a tall tower at the edge of the kingdom, and uses the girl's hair to keep herself young as the years pass and the hair grows (the girl, Rapunzel by name, loses her power if her hair is cut, you see, just like Samson!). Each year, meanwhile, on the anniversary of the stolen princess' birth, her grieving parents let loose thousands of floating lanterns over the palace, hoping their daughter will see. She DOES see, from the tower window, and longs to visit the kingdom for her upcoming 18th birthday and find out the secret of the lanterns. When a roguish common thief chances upon her tower, she first brains him with a frying pan and then realizes he's her ticket to visiting the kingdom and uncovering the secret of the lanterns - but the cranky witch is in hot pursuit. Mayhem, comedy, and music ensue.

A nicely-done Disney film; I wish it would've been traditional animation rather than that computer stuff, though. The songs are okay, although I found it odd that the wicked old witch is given the best song in the movie ("Mother Knows Best"). There are two funny animals in this one; Rapunzel has a (silent) chameleon that's cute, but won't make anyone forget Mulan's Mushu. The thief ("Flynn Rider" by name) has a horse, but the damn thing hates him and is trying to kill him throughout the movie, which is actually hilarious. Fun for grownups and I think kids'll love it.

The deal with Maximus is that he's first and last a police horse -- Joe Friday on four legs. His mission is to take down Flynn and retrieve the stolen goods, even if he misplaces his nominal master along the way. And of course Flynn regards him the way any cocky thief would regard a humorless cop. Maximus and Flynn pretend to tolerate each other because Rapunzel asks them to, but not willingly until the end.

The film was nicely free of annoying sidekicks -- Pascal was almost a believable little lizard; Maximus was intelligent and obsessive but still a horse; and neither of them sang or did standup jokes. Likewise, the cheery thugs in the tavern didn't wear out their welcome.

Rainy day here in Ohio so I goes and sees two movies: Tangled *** was a nice surprise. I knew it had great word of mouth and sure enough, it turned out to be a first class, very entertaining movie. Good story, animation, comedy and action.
Then I saw "Unknown" with Liam Neesom. A decent action movie that gets too convoluted and unbelievable for its own good. **

Finally got around to watching this on Blu-ray; excellent picture, good sound. Rapunzel is a stronger character than the typical Disney heroine. The dialogue and song lyrics seem a bit forced at times, trying to match past Disney classics but not quite up to the task. Still an enjoyable movie, combining the traditional with a contemporary feel, but not overdoing it like the Shrek films. My favorite scene: the tavern, where Rapunzel prompts the various ruffians and thugs to sing about their dreams.

Million-dollar Dialog:

Her, introducing himself: "Rapunzel."
Him, misunderstanding: "Gesundheit."

Yeah, with Angie in town, we're watching this again. Um, and again. And again. She likes to leave it on all day, just like when she was a little girl of 28. Funny movie.
