Ahhhhh, much better. Just finished watching some kinda preview of the "New Looney Tunes" where the Roadrunner engaged in some kinda martial arts combat with the Coyote. That did NOT bode well!! |

Someone emailed me this. It's supposed to be Chuck Jones's rules for the writers of the Roadrunner cartoons. Dunno if it's authentic or not but........

Happened to catch a Chuck Jones toon today -- "Steal Wool". It's one of the Coyote/Wolf versus Sheepdog series. Not the best of the batch, but pretty solid. Those were a fun spin on the Roadrunner formula. The wolf, Ralph, and the dog, Sam, punch in on a timeclock at the beginning of each cartoon, making a little small talk. They become deadly (and silent) enemies as Ralph tries to steal sheep and/or eradicate Sam, in a very Wile E. Coyote way. Sam, with seemingly zero expenditure of energy or emotion, neatly foils any plot that doesn't backfire of its own accord. Sam frequently pounds Ralph with a jackhammer fist, but even that seems effortless. At the 5 o'clock whistle they punch out and walk home together, absolutely no hard feelings after hours. With maybe one exception, they always punch in on the same timeclock. Did some sheep farmer feel it necessary to have a sheepdog AND a wolf on the payroll? Or is it a meta thing, with self-aware cartoon characters showing up each day, lunch pails in hand, to crank out violent gags? I prefer the idea of the sheep farmer, perhaps misreading a Dept. of Agriculture brochure or listening to an idiot son with an MBA. Sure it makes no sense, but this here expert says . . . A favorite ending has Ralph clutching a lighted stick of dynamite in the payoff to a gag. Sam snuffs the fuse. "It's too late in the day. Let's pick it up from there tomorrow." They punch out and walk into the sunset together, saying something about it being a good life. And you know at 9 am the next morning Ralph will pick up the dynamite and Sam will helpfully light it. |

The thought never entered my mind, Bats. Panzer had the perfect comeback anyway. I've caught some of those Ralph the dog and coyote cartoons late at night on the Boomerang Network and agree with Cliff's comments. |

I don't think that's a coyote in those. I believe it's a wolf. |

Thanks, Chandy. You just never know how a post will come across. Jazzy, you are right, it's a wolf. The Sam/Ralph series is one of my favourites. In fact, my GM at work and I greet each other every morning with a "Morning, Sam", "Morning, Ralph" exchange. I said it once, years ago, off the cuff and he responded perfectly. Now it's our thing. |
