The military has created a giant mutant octopus-shark hybrid to destroy drug runners in the Gulf of Mexico, and keep it on a tight leash that gets destroyed during a test swim, freeing the beastie to chomp on a variety of bikini-clad babes on the beaches of our neighbor to the south. A team of young scientists, military personnel, and adventurers try to capture it, under strict orders from cranky scientist Eric Roberts to bring it back alive.

Some people wouldn't know a good movie if it swam up and bit them on the ass. Sharktopus (produced by Roger and Julie Corman) is as good as most of Corman's movies of the 1950s, and those are some of the most beloved low-budget thrillers in movie history. (Corman himself, by the way, has a cameo appearance that is absolutely priceless.) It's cheesy when it should be cheesy, the monster's totally cool, the film has daffy dialog and lotsa beautiful women in skimpy suits, the guys are muscular and heroic, the body count is phenomenal, the movie's a brisk 89 minutes long and never drags, and the low rating on the IMDB is from idiots. This is a fun movie and will hold up to re-viewings.

Good review! You've told all I want to know.

We can take it for granted, I think, that IMDb ratings are worthless. People who can't appreciate art movies as well as B pictures review them anyway. Check out the "reviews" on the NETFLIX website. When some frat rat is disappointed that the movie he rented isn't dirty, he'll give it one star and it doesn't take many of those to drag the rating down; result is, these Internet ratings, though democratic in principle, don't work. Have you ever tried to review a movie you watched drunk? There are folks who are never anything but drunk whether they drink or not. They may grow up someday, but right now they can't think. The sad truth is, at least for now their opinions don't matter.
Life is just a bowl of cherries, it's too mysterious, don't take it serious...

I have watched Sharktopus plus the various other mutant creature films Corman has put out over the past few years...and though they can be construed as mindless...they are a great deal of fun in the 1960's drive in style.....I find them amusing and much more entertaining than lets say the remake of Piranha in 3D.....

I loved the remake of Piranha in 3D.
