When we discussed PERILS OF NYOKA in the chat room at the Cliffhanger Productions site, the one comment I remember was. "I can't find a single thing wrong with it." This is also special to me because I met eight people from the serial.

Wow - did ya meet that fellow who left before folk could thank him?
Yes, I met Clayton Moore at the Golden Boot Awards. He started to leave right after the ceremony, but I headed him off at the pass, and managed to get one autograph, on a lobby card from the Lone Ranger feature with him in the scene. I also met Kay Aldridge, Lorna Gray, William Benedict, Tristram Coffin, Dave Sharpe, Tom Steele, and William Witney.
Clayton Moore used to make public appearances in his mask and costume, I understand, but when the makers of the Klinton Spilsbury movie banned him from wearing said costume, he got round the ban by wearing large dark glasses - how was he dressed when you met him?

In his book, I WAS that Masked Man, Clayton Moore describes a convention for TV heroes where folk like Dale Robertson etc. appeared on stage to polite, enthusiastic applause, but when he appeared the audience started cheering, lol!

They talk about legends - he really was one.

A few thoughts on Episode Five, "Trapped in the Quicksand"...

Jack Mulhall, delivering one of those convoluted-but-necessary-to-explain-shit-in-a-breakneck-serial lines o' dialog: "They've got Tim a prisoner in that abandoned swamp where we lost him that day!"

Most unexpected moment in the serial so far: Lazar serenading Tim with a love song. Note how the love song seems to upset the animals, but Tim kinda likes it.

Most unexpected line in a love song: "Ees no joke to make love to the crocodiles."

Stupidest line in the serial so far, as Tim spots that enormous tank parked by the side of the road: "Say, isn't that the jungle cruiser?"

Question I can't get out of my mind: What th' hell is an "abandoned swamp"???
LOL - well observed! :)

I wanna know: who was the guy that halfway blackened that leopard, how did he do it, and how much did they pay him?

The answer to that is Washington DC during Congress's break.

Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but I had plenty of time to watch Chapter 8 this weekend in NYC, what with all the subways closed down and the Mayor telling everyone to hide in their houses because of the hurricane (which turned out not to be all that bad).
So, I was ready to believe Spider's bragging about how convincing his German professor impersonation was--that is, until I heard him deliver the line, "Dot is der patient?" Yipes! I expected Tim to answer, "Well, it's my father, but his name's not Dot."
Anyway, I appreciated that when Lora noticed the tell-tale scar on Spider's arm it was shown with a quick pan rather than a cut--just like a real movie. But I wonder, was that scar ever mentioned before?

I didn't notice if it was. I liked Chapter 8 -- it moved right along, and you do feel like the story is getting somewhere. Spider was cute in his doctor getup. Glad to leave the gorillas behind -- they needed them for two-reelers at Columbia.

Yeah, that hurricane was a yuk. Big fuss over a Category One. People who live in the barrier islands don't even stock up on milk for a storm that wimpy. We are ill-served by the Chicken Littles in the media -- when a real storm comes along people will ignore the warnings.

Well, I just got to episode 6, "Jaws of the Jungle!"

Random thoughts this chapter...

Who in the hell is that African warrior with the spear and the shield that opens each chapter? He runs out of the hut, grabs his stuff, and takes off: segue to the comic strip. The warrior's never seen again. Was this the editor's poker buddy, and he promised him a part in a serial? Or what?

Here's what Tim gets for showing such affection for Lazar's love song in the previous episode: Lazar think's Tim is a girl! "The keed? She's all right?"

Lines I wish'd I'd have thought of, part 1: "Sometimes I don't understand even things that I know."

Understatement of the day to a vicious criminal: "Sarcasm from you isn't gonna do any good!"

Lines I wish'd I'd have thought of, part 2: "I told you this was a phony setup, Spider! It's her chimp!"

Excitement of the week: a hyena frightening a horse.

I sure the hell miss Knox Manning! How exciting would it have been to have him end this episode (following the gong) with, "Will Ju-Ju escape from the lion?!"

Comic moment of the week: Tim just standing there flabbergasted while the chimp tears past him in the opposite direction. If Ju-Ju could talk, he no doubt would've said, "THERE'S A LION AFTER ME! RUN, YOU DUMB SON OF A BITCH!"

Poor Tim is in a right pickle surrounded by those crocodiles or are they alligators?

Love that gun battle with Spider's men firing at the Congo Queen - very casual - I would've got behind a large rock or tree to avoid oncoming bullets! :D

Oh yeah, Tim's in a pickle alright. I wonder how he'll get out of it?

What was Spider thinking? He's just going to get the steerman to ground the boat and hop off with the professor? It would be tough since all the crew seems to have firearms. As far as I know, Spider never found out where the burial ground was located, so he'd need the Professor.
It's like Rodney King used to say, "Can't we all get a bong."

Now I'm going by fallible memory here, but I think that shot of Tim popping out of the water surrounded by crocs was first used in an earlier serial, CALL OF THE SAVAGE. They just replaced Noah Beery Jr's head with Frankie Thomas'.

I think the warrior is footage from Jungle Jim, which had a similar recap set up.

Nah, it's Paul Robeson responding to an early morning studio call and repairing to the set of Sanders of the River!

Still catching up, watched chapter 7, "King of the Gorillas".

Least assuring calm-down speech from a naturalist I've ever heard, to that shrieking whats-her-name:

"Don't be alarmed! That's a gorilla, warning his tribe!"

Spider's in the Ivory Patrol clink, recognises one of the guards who's wanted for bank robbery and murder and threatens to blackmail him!
There's an elephant operated by a dodgy mahout and a lot of Fang slinking around.

A quiet episode but interesting.
