< dodgy mahout and a lot of Fang slinking around.>
This was one of my childhood favorites from the early 'fifties, and after seeing this thread I decided to revisit it. I believe the actor who played the mahout also played a bit in chapter one as the native who runs to the fort to warn the Ivory Patrol of the shooting of the ranger.

This time around I'm counting the number of times someone is shot or otherwise hurt and Tim - or someone else - runs to get some water! A magic elixir!

I especially like the music score, drawing on cues from Universal's library, primarily from "White Hell of Pitz Palu" and "East of Java."

One of the things that detracts from this serial is that so many stock shots don't match. A lion with a full mane will charge and in a succeeding shot the lion has gotten a haircut! I suppose kids didn't notice that.

The set that represented the Ivory Patrol fort/headquarters - does anyone know which film it was built for?

I hope I'm not the only one left still watching a chapter of TIM a week. Anyway--observations on Chapter Nine:

The chapter ran a full 20 minutes without a fight or a big chase, and it still held my interest throughout. How many serials manage to do that?

Too bad Tim's father didn't get a death scene. I wonder if they decided that kids wouldn't want to see that, or was the actor just not available that day?

The actor playing Spider is a really great villain. I don't know how he does it, but manages to say every line with both a snarl and a sneer--every line.

What's going on with Fang? She was pregnant the whole time she was following Tim around? (I didn't even know Fang was a girl.) And now she's showing off her babies. (Are they setting us up for one of those cute final shot fade-outs?)

Maybe Fang being an unwed mother was trying to hide her identity - hence the dye job.

What he said. There was no Florence Crittenden for leothers, or panpards for that matter.

I've started seeing dodgy mahouds behind every door.

I'm hanging in there with ya.

Now Tim's in peril with an elephant. Whatever ya do, don't go to the zoo with Timmy.

Chapter 10 -- the title should be "Tim Gets His Own Elephant." That Tim Tyler's really did have some luck. But then it runs out at the end of the episode (can't tell you how). Two things -- this has an immense cast for a serial; not only are there dozens of extras, but there are at least ten important speaking parts as well as a number of bits. I guess that's the advantage of shooting a serial on a major lot. The other thing, I've been struck in the last two chapters by how well-matched the stock is with the rest -- some sharp editing here. So let's have a chorus of the Wyndham Gittins fight song:

Wyndam Gittens
Had three kittens
And he fed them well.

He knew where he'd
Footage buried
And which didn't smell.

To his credit
He could edit
film to beat the band

So let's give 'im
Wyndham Gitten'
A resounding hand!

Rah! Rah! The Wise Man of Serials!

All right, finally! Every time I see Anthony Warde in a major role in a serial, I always wait for the moment when he pulls a gun on the heroine and snarls, "OK, let's go, sister." And at last we got to it in chapter 10. Bad guys just don't call women "sister" any more. I wonder if that died out with Anthony Warde.

And the gorillas are back. Did you ever see that many gorilla suits in a single shot? Did Universal pretty much round up every gorilla suit in Hollywood to make this serial? Did all the other jungle B-pictures have to go on hiatus until TIM TYLER'S LUCK was done filming and gorilla suits again became available?

I followed episode 12 of Brenda Starr (see that thread, if you wanna) with episode 3 of Tim Tyler. Back in the 1930s, broken arms healed really quickly, although seeing the man talk about how he can't shave with one arm while he uses BOTH arms perfectly well is kinda weird.

Say, has anyone ever noticed that the Western Electric logo at the beginning of old films looks like a hot dog? In fact, I always, always think of it as the "Western Electric Hot Dog" but I've never thought to share that before. Anybody else?

FANG the panther? And why is everybody calling what's obviously a LEOPARD a PANTHER, anyway? And FANG? Was it married to Phyllis Diller at one point?

If I'm riding in a tank and a guy's gonna toss a grenade, I'm gonna ask him to go outside and do it, not trust him to be able to toss it accurately though a small porthole in a tank moving quickly over bumpy grounds with twists and turns.

Best line of episode three, from Tim: "Savages, Mr. Conway. The jungle's FULL of 'em!"
Actually I always thought it was the Heinz pickle- had a heck of a time figuring that relationship out

According to the ever reliable Wikipedia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_panther) Black panthers are leopards.

Tim has luck in every chapter -- the title doesn't say good luck.

Sarge, that joint's so funky it makes Harlem look like Disneyland. Wit, it's not exactly identical to GROSS, but distinctive, let us say.
