Latest night I watched the oldest surviving American feature, 1912's THE LIFE AND DEATH OF RICHARD III with Frederick Warde as the title character. The DVD from Kino included a new score by Ennio Morricone. As a piece of film history, it is fascinating to see what was only the second or third American feature. As a feature, it is fast-paced and extremely well done. Warde does a great job as Richard, playing what may be the first of the truly great screen villains. Broken into five parts--each one of which seems to correspond to an act of Shakespeare's play, this is pretty intense and violent stuff. In particular, the murder of the two princes seemed particularly mean. Depsite the handicap of not being able to physically speak Shakespeare's language (seeing as this is silent) and distilling the four hour play into a single hour, this is a truly great film. If you're a film (or Shakespeare) buff, you need to see this. The Kino DVD is excellent and the film has only slight amounts of deterioration. It also includes a fairly interesting documentary on the rediscovery of the movie. |
