![]() The Hammer Studios Balcony Express Special rolls on. The American headliner this time out is Dan Duryea (wearing a coat that doesn't fit, for some reason), an American flyer stationed in England and married to just to the loveliest li'l thing. Alas, he's transferred stateside for a few months and in his absence, the missus has apparently been quite naughty. He sneaks home to confront her, but before he gets the chance, she's dead, he's framed, and he has 36 hours to find the killer before the military steps in and takes him out. Luckily, he's got a cute helper, Ann Gudrun (Gudrun Ure these days) who's got his back. Highly inspired by Hitchcock, enjoyably so. Duryea - one of the sleaziest of noir actors - comes off pretty well as the confused but tough hero, and the supporting cast does a good job keeping up with him. The various villains do all the detective work; the Scotland Yard inspector is much more concerned where his next tea is coming from, rather than his next clue. The climax is a fight staged in the usual Hammer tiny set (a basement, this time), but it works in a claustophobic way. The Hitchcockian echos, sense of humor, and performance by Duryea make this one of the best of the Hammers I've seen so far. |
