Here's what little I've been able to find out. It's not a re-release of the old Kino version from Blackhawk. They're saying it's a new transfer of a tinted 35mm print from a foreign archive. Difference in running time between this and the 2002 version is mostly due to transfer speed, though there are a few minutes of more footage. Also, the tinting is different from the earlier DVD. Worth having? Depends on how fanatical you are, especially if you already have the 1998 release. I'm waiting to see the reviews, but if you're curious about the movie and haven't seen it, the new one would save you money. The DVD has the fist two of what was planned as a four-feature serial that FRITZ LANG, no less, never completed. Its influence on later serials is incalculable. I enjoyed it in the Blackhawk version, which, if you can find it now, would cost an arm at least, and maybe a leg too. Incidentally, three more early Lang silents that some books call lost have come to light and will be released pretty soon. Halbblut (Halfbreed) 1919, Vier um die Frau (Four Around the Lady) 1921, and Harakiri (1919). That will leave only two lost Lang pictures -- extremely lucky. Some cynics may say he'd have been luckier if these three had stayed lost, but we'll see. After all, Destiny was made in this same period, and it's a masterpiece. Bats, I would have e-mailed you this info but for now I'm using a borrowed 'puter. |

Well, ya know, I make mistakes these days. I'm at my son's house in Atlanta, and last night I went out to the hot tub and to watch a beautiful sunset. When I was through, I found I had locked myself out of the house, where my clothes, the keys, and warmth were. All I had was a towel and cold, wet swim trunks. Of course the windows were locked; it's a "transitional" neighborhood. Took me a shivering while to figure out what to do, but I did, and it worked. Boy, did I feel senile for a few minutes there. |
