Something funny's going on... The temperature is rising, an eclipse happens ten days before schedule, steam is rising from the oceans... The Russians and Americans separately set off H-Bomb tests, and it's beginning to appear that they've knocked the Earth right out of its orbit. And it gets hotter and hotter, the government denies anything's wrong, and bulldog reporters Leo McKern, Edward Judd, and Michael Goodliffe try to figure it all out, with the help of the viciously lovely and sexy Janet Munro. Miss Munro (former Disney ingenue) is a government secretary who takes a lot of baths and puts on a lot of thin, flimsy robes afterwards, complimenting the drama quite nicely. I thought this film excellent, although talky and taking its sweet time getting to the special effects (which include tinting the screen a blazing-hot golden color as the temperature rises). Really gives you a good feel for what a newspaper office is like, or at least what I think one must've been like in those days, complete with a pub around the corner where everything gets hashed out. Janet Munro steals the picture, by the way, and is just ravishing. Never very healthy, the victim of a terrible auto accident, and a drinker, she wouldn't live to see 39. Such a shame. Our season finale of FNF included Shemp Howard as the very funny Mr. Noisy ("Watch 'im MISS it!!!"), the Looney Tunes Buccaneer Bunny and Duck Amuck, and Terry & the Pirates wrapping up "The Secret of the Temple". A great time. |
