Oskar, a lonely, bullied 12-year-old boy is befriended by Eli, a mysterious girl his own age (altho, as she explains, she's "been 12 for a long time"). Eli, you see, is a vampire, which doesn't affect their relationship but comes in handy sometimes.

A bleak film with gorgeous cinematography and it's less about vampires than it is about relationships between adolescents. As Roger Ebert said, we care more about these children than they care about themselves.

Beautifully photographed, with moments of horror done tastefully (as these things go). Highly recommended, but look for the version with SUBTITLES: ENGLISH (THEATRICAL).

Though first released in 2008, it is one of my picks for Best Movies of 2009.

This is a terrific movie. Creepy, atmospheric, poetic, full of striking images, emotionally complex, verging on bad taste, suspenseful, an exquisitely ambivalent ending. It stays with you for days. If Bergman had made a vampire movie it would look like this.

Let the Right One In.

I watched yet another vampire movie over the weekend. Let the Right One In. One of the more scary vampires I have ever seen. This is a foreign film, from Sweden, or Switzerland, one of those countries that snows none stop. This vampire happens to be a little girl, whose eyes glow in the dark. She completely freaked me out, plus she looks as though she smells bad, REAL BAD. Unlike Dracula who appears to smell just like Polo, a vampire that can bite me on the neck anytime, day or night. Well, any man wearing Polo can bite me just about any time he wants too, ummm, okay, not just ANY man.

So this little girl vampire, needs to have a slave. This slave has been with her for, OH, I would say fifty or so years. He goes out and collects blood for her to eat, I am
guessing she doesn't really like biting people, so she gets him to do it for her. He is starting to get a little lax a lazy about the blood gathering thing, so she starts looking for a new slave, enter the little boy slave. This is the part of the movie you can tell is a foreign film, (well I guess the sub-titles kind of give it away) the new boy slave, walks around in little teeny tiny whitey tighties. I don't think they can show little kids in their undies in America any more...can they?

I was at the edge of my seat with this movie. Now usually, I like getting all curled up under a blanket, maybe a pillow under my head, you know, real comfy like. But, as scary as this movie was, it was late when I got to watching it, so I started nodding off, thus the edge of my seat. Sitting at the edge of my seat was a little distracting, because I kept imagining myself falling asleep and fwacking my face on the floor as I fell over, but it did work, I was able to finish this movie without napping. So when it was over, I went off to bed, I was so worked up over this movie, I couldn't get to sleep. It took me almost 15 minutes to nod off.

So, if you are looking for a different take on a vampire flick, watch this one. I still have chills.
