Hour-long feature cobbled together from footage shot by Warner Bros. for a series of 1931 short subjects called Adventures in Africa. Ugh. Painful stuff if you're a lover of animals or humans. The narrator has the same smart-ass, condescending tone as Pete Smith at his worst ("For a pound of salt, the native king will trade a couple of his wives and two of his mothers in law") and the natives are all considered to be good-natured, superstitious idiots who simply don't know any better. We see animals treed, pitted, roped, netted, and held down with sticks. Oh, and eaten. Not a lot of animal-on-animal violence, at least. Wynant Hubbard and his family (including two toddlers) are the family on this little 18-month trip into the heart of Africa, and I'm shocked they weren't all eaten by something or other. Lots of the science and descriptions are wrong or goofy (termites are referred to as "ants" and the iguana is described as the "grandfather of today's lizards") and the footage is exploitative without being particularly of educational interest, more of the gawk and point interest for kids or dimwits. An ugly film. You can find it, if you want, as a bonus on the Kongo DVD from the Warner Archive. |
