Press Release Source: Warner Home Video Warner Home Video Opens a Can of Spinach as It Prepares to Distribute Popeye Tuesday June 6, 3:46 pm ET I Yam What I Yam! The Most Popular ''Sailor Man'' Comes to DVD in 2007 BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 2006--Warner Home Video (WHV), Hearst Entertainment and King Features Syndicate have reached an agreement for the exclusive worldwide home entertainment distribution of both the classic Popeye theatrical animated shorts and the Popeye made-for-TV animated shorts. The announcement was jointly made by Jeff Brown, WHV Senior Vice President and General Manager TV and Franchise, and T.R. ("Rocky") Shepard III, President of King Features Syndicate. WHV will be the exclusive worldwide home entertainment distributor for all classic Popeye theatrical and television properties. The new agreement has cleared Warner's home video distribution rights for the original 231 Popeye animated shorts released theatrically by Paramount Pictures between 1933 and 1957. In addition, WHV has licensed the exclusive rights to 220 Popeye made-for-TV animated shorts produced from 1960 to 1962, 65 episodes of The Continuing Adventures of Popeye, produced from 1978 to 1981 (consisting of 161 animated shorts) and 26 Popeye & Son shorts produced in 1987. Warner's first Popeye DVD release is expected to street in 2007. The theatrical library consists of 120 black & white shorts (106 of these were produced by Fleischer Studios, the remaining 14 were produced by Famous Studios) and 111 Technicolor cartoons (three produced by Fleischer Studios and 108 produced by Famous Studios). Warner Home Video plans to commence preservation and restorationactivities immediately. Regarding the announcement, Brown remarked, "We are extremely excited to bring fans one of the most recognized, iconic characters who has spanned seven decades. Popeye is the only major theatrical franchise in film history that never received a legitimate home video release." He added, "For years Warner Bros. had been inundated by consumer letters demanding the release of Popeye, an underdog, a hero, a character who always represents good, and WHV is proud to bring this illustrious collection to DVD." King Features and Popeye go back 77 years, from the minute he walked into Elzie Segar's THIMBLE THEATER comic strip and muttered his famous "D'ja think I'm a cowboy?" line, to his recent primetime CGI special, Popeye has captured the hearts of millions of fans around the world. Shepard said "In all my years at King Features and with the Hearst Corporation, I have yet to experience the enthusiastic outpour of support and love for a dynamic character as I have witnessed with Popeye. That's why I'm thrilled to be able to give the fans a chance to relive some of their favorite Popeye, Bluto, Olive Oyl, Wimpy and Swee' Pea moments on a soon to be released Warner Home Video DVD. Fans can now own, enjoy and share Popeye with many spinach-loving generations to come." With operations in 90 international territories Warner Home Video, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, commands the largest distribution infrastructure in the global video marketplace. There was a live chat at Home Theatre Forums last night and the guests were from Warners' TV and Animation departments. Before the chat began, there were a few announcements and one important one was that Warners had secured the official DVD rights to all of King Features' Popeye cartoons. Warners will begin immediately on restoration work and they plan to release the first Popeye DVD set sometime next year. |

I wonder what this will mean to all the sets that have come from places like Platinum and VCI? Will they have to be withdrawn from the market? |

No, there are a handful of public domain Fleischer Popeyes (and considerably more PD "Famous Studios" Popeyes of the 1950s) and those are the ones that have been endlessly recycled by various companies. Incidentally, the 17 Fleischer/Famous Superman cartoons have been digitally restored and remastered by Warners and will be released later this year, too. P.S. It's reported by Jerry Beck at the Cartoon Brew that Warners will release the cartoons in chronological order. I hope there's no problem with the very first Popeye cartoon (a guest appearance in a Betty Boop 'toon) being included! |

I was at the Home Theatre Forum chat last night, which had people from Warner Bros TV & Animation division as guests. Their first announcement at the chat was this spectacular news about Popeye. After seeing the care that Warners put into their Looney Tunes releases, Popeye fans should be quite happy that their hero is in the same reliable hands. They also announced the Superman cartoons, and when asked why they would bother with a Public Domain property, they replied to the effect (remember I am paraphrasing, but it is the gist of it): "We are digitally remastering all the cartoons, and ensuring all original voices, music and sound effects are intact. This release is for the fans, and will be part of the upcoming Superman Mega-Set, out later this year." This sounds like a great set, so far. LG, any word on what else might be in this Superman Mega-Set? |

Hey, Rogmeister, were you at the HTF chat last night, too? There were some great announcements, don't you think? If you were there, what did you think of those EVERWOOD fans? Talk about pushing your luck. |

Yep. The four Superman films with Christopher Reeves, plus this summer's Superman Returns, plus a "restored director's cut" of Richard Donner's version of Superman II (before he was replaced by Richard Lester), plus some other stuff. It's going to be a big, expensive box. |

And for Superman fans, like myself, it'll be worth every penny. Though I won't be against partaking in any retailer discounts. Will the Superman serials be in this collection as well, LG? |

I was there for awhile. I was even going to ask a question...mainly about if Maverick or any other westerns were coming. Then someone else asked about Maverick and I left soon after. |

I read somewhere that the Superman serials would not be part of this set. By the way, there's a documentary about Superman that is coming out on DVD but A&E is airing it first. It's scheduled to be on their channel Monday evening. I think it's 2 hours long and will begin at 8PM. |

Yep, A&E will be airing the documentary, prior to its release on DVD. But, the DVD release will be at least 20 minutes longer, and of course, will contain extras. Though, the A&E airing is a nice way to preview the doc, to see if it warrants a purchase. Too bad about the serials not being in the upcoming Mega-Set. At least they are being released this year, that's good enough for me. What a year for the Man of Steel. |

Yeah, I tried to get a question in there, too, but I got shutout every time. Luckily, like you, I had all my questions asked by others. The continued non-movement on a release of the 1960s Batman series was the low-point for me. The combination of the Popeye announcement and Warners continued customer service efforts with their disc replacement programs was the highlight. |

I remember something about a corrected disc on one of the Looney Tunes sets. I'm a little vague on what the problem is. Could you explain that? I need to go back and see if mine needs replacing... |

Rogmeister, I recall them mentioning a problem, too. I believe on disc 2 (Vol. 2?), but from what I recall, they did not specify the problem. |
