Yesterday, a trip to Costco netted me the Popeye set, which they'd put out a week early, on accident. Unfortunately, I was stopped at the checkout line by the computer, which advised them of their error. No matter how much I begged, pleaded, cajoled, and threatened, they wouldn't sell me the damn thing, and they went and took all the copies on display and put 'em away. Rats.

I've experienced that before, too, LG. Wouldn't have happened with a good old fahsioned manual cash register. Damn computers!

Gravy: #48 - The Greatest Man in Siam

Loved it as a kid -- hope it holds up. BTW, when we first got a TV set, Woody Woodpecker was the first thing I watched on it.

Well, the computers lost this one. I picked up the new Popeye set on Friday, which my local retailer had on the shelf eary, by mistake. Don't know how it got by the computer, but I wasn't going to complain. I just kept my eyes down and kept quiet, while the purchase was rung in.

I have watched the first five Popeye cartoons, so far, and they look great. I also watched the first four with their commentaries (the fifth 'toon in does not have one) and found them informative and/or fun. There are commetaries galore, bonus cartoons and lots of featurettes on Popeye and cartoons in general.

Come this Tuesday, I don't think any Popeye fans will be disappointed with this set. Highly recommended.

Yesterdays (7/29/07) Washington Post had a fairly lengthy review of the DVD set and also a story on the Isis TV Series box set. These should be on their web site.

Well, since the link does not appear to work, I guess you must be registered.

Jazzy, what was their take on the Isis set?

The Popeye DVD set is on its way to Rancho Yesteryear, but since everyone has spoken glowingly of the Woody Woodpecker collection I went ahead and ordered that one today as well...and this from someone who never really cared for Woody (I thought he was a tad obnoxious).

Thanks, PP, I tried it again and it did work. I was able to read the Popeye review, but had to register to see any other reviews.

Got the POPEYE Vol. 1 yesterday from Best Buy (in collectors tin). OMG! Incredible remastering! The b&w shorts are amazingly clear and pristine. It's amazing the elements from 1933 - 1938 are in such great condition! The two color features (I watched one "Ali Baba")look amazingly vibrant, clean and new. If you're a fan go out and buy it today! It's like they were made today!

Regards,
Beatle Bob
