On the upcoming Popeye DVD: "Gulliver's Travels" is out as an extra and Poopdeck Pappy and The Jeep are in!
Last night I phoned in, with questions and comments, to a live radio broadcast from L.A. talking with Jerry Beck of “Cartoon Research.”
He and host Stu Shostak, owner of the radio station, were talking for 2 hours about the DVD releases of Popeye, Looney Tunes, Woody Woodpecker and more. It was fun and very interesting as they put forth lots of opinions and info on cartoons.
One fact is that “Gulliver’s Travels” will NOT be an extra on the upcoming Popeye DVD set. To find out why not and also why it will only be a 2 disc set, and what famous person was the voice of Willy Whopper and mucho other tidbits . . . . “toon” in as the broadcast repeats Feb 28, 29 and March 1 at 7-9pm EST at www.shokusradio.com.
Jerry Beck and I talked and laughed during the commercials. Jerry told the host to hurry up with the ads that “We’ve got a call all the way from Ohio.” He asked me what I thought of the quality of all the stuff I’ve purchased from him, etc. Then suddenly I was on the 7 second delay. My blithering is at the 1 hour mark right after a commercial break.
Oh yea, my real name is Sgt King but for this I used a fake name – Duane.

Being WWII cartoons, and the last of the black and whites, these will be very enjoyable, no doubt. I hope they do not censor any of the "racial" stuff from the WWII cartoons.

I look forward to the color 'toons in volume 4. I'll grab them all.

Haven't seen any collector tins or anything so far for the Popeye Vol 2 Collection but if anyone knows of any place offering something special, like Best Buy did last time, please post info here. Thanks.

There aren't any collector tins this time, unfortunately.

Best Buy -- those nitwits -- posted a picture of a collector tin in this past Sunday's circular, but if you look closely, you see it's the Vol. 1 tin!

My copy of Popeye Vol. 2 arrived yesterday. I'm watching Disc #1 now. Beautiful prints. Too bad WHV packaging isn't as good of quality as the DVDs. Pretty shitty cardboard slipcovers.

The spine won't stand up straight so you can scan it to make a DVD Cover that will fit into a standard size 2 DVD Case. I had no problem with Volume 1 as there were 4 DVDS in the case and the spine was a little wider.

I'm sure my balconeer buddy who does my DVD Covers will figure out something that will work. I'm looking forward to Volume 3.

Regards:

Ron McKnight.

Apparently, there's a problem with Disc 1 and Warners is offering a replacement...

There's a LOT wrong with this half-assed release.

There's nothing about this set that would make me rather watch tapes instead. I've registered for the replacement disc just 'cause, but after having checked out the reported problems, they struck me as being so incidental as to present virtually zero impact on the enjoyability factor.

Oh, I'm still planning on buying it, but I thought the first set was just about perfect. Knowing that they're already cutting corners disapoints me.

I was told once that it costs the studio a hair bit more to have produced. The reason they do the cardboard packaging like that instead of a standard plastic case is because bootleggers have a harder time making a copy of a cardboard packaging rather than scan and copy the slip cover from a plastic case. Course, bootleggers can easily make their own cover and a copy of the discs, but the studio's reasons may be justified.
