Wait, how'd you get a copy if it's not out until Nov. 4th? Warners is sending me an advanced copy this week... I have to admit to not being a huge Popeye fan though. |

I'm much more interested in the Vol. 3 collection of the original Segar Popeye comic strips. The hardcover collections are beautiful. You can see a slide show preview of the upcoming book at the link below. Fantagraphics Books - Popeye Vol. 3 |

I'll buy them both. But really, if you don't like the Popeye cartoons, you should still give the comic strip a shot. One of the best ever, really. |

For anyone that didn't pick up Warner's release of Popeye the Sailor: 1933-1938, Vol. 1, I saw it yesterday at Big Lots for $3. This isn't a knock off. It's the actual 4-DVD, 60 cartoon set, beautifully remastered that I spent $40 bucks on when it came out originally. They had lots of copies of it at the store I visited, so you may want to check if you have a Big Lots in your area. |

My local Big Lots did not have the Popeyes, but I did score some DVDs for 3 bucks each, such as: The 1st season of Superman (w/Geo reeves) and Superman/Mole Men. Seasons 3 and 4 of Superman (in color ... these were in color?). Seasons 5 and 6 of Superman (in color ... these were in color?). Alas, no season 2! |

Yes, seasons 1 & 2 (52 episodes) were in B&W and the remaining seasons (52 episodes) were in color. |

Went to two Big Lots over the weekend. One just had the usual remaindered "thrillers" but the other had a bunch of Popeye Volume 1 and seasons 2 & 3 of the Flintstones at the $3 price, so poking around may pay. Myself, I got a chuck of Christmas shopping finished. |

BIG LOTS always carries what the studios are willing to liquidate for a price because what doesn't sell in stores normally come back in returns (and the studios have to pay the distributor to have the returns sent to them) so selling them at discounts to make back their money is the only way to recoup (or repackage them into bigger box sets like some studios do). But keep in mind that if the item doesn't sell well in the stores, the studios stop producing them. That's why DRAGNET season 2, Kojak season 2, Have Gun Will Travel seasons 4 thru 6, Cheyenne seasons 2 thru 9, and Leave It To Beaver season 3 are not coming out on DVD. Sales did not meet their expectations. So buying the DVDs when they come out sends a message to the studio. And frankly, there's a lot of titles that once they go out of print the cost goes up and they never end up at discount centers like BIG LOTS so do always assume a specific release will be available at a cheaper price. I paid $80 for two particular DVD releases that went out of print and NO ONE has been able to find them cheaper in the past year and I had to break down and pay the ransom. |
