![]() Rather routine Technicolor jungle adventure helped along by a good cast but mainly by cheesy backlot effects that bring a sense of fun to the whole project. There's something just... entertaining... about watching a "jungle movie" filmed on what appears to be a Disneyland Jungle Cruise attraction. Glenn Ford is trying to get a great deal of money to some revolutionaries trying to overthrow a dictator; refused permission to enter the country by boat, he mutinies with the help of a punch of political prisoners, who promptly take a wealthy American couple (Ann Sheridan and Zachery Scott) prisoner for ransom. Everybody's going to have to get across the jungle to safety, or to death, or for money, or something. Highlights include cartoon insects attacking the party, a school of man-eating "tiger fish" stripping an alligator to the bones (and the bones then crawling out of the water; you have to see it), various species of big jungle cat attacking various members of the safari; attacks by ants and by bats(!); and Miss Sheridan constantly taking her jacket off and being told by Ford to "put it back on!" because of the leers of the Hondurans. Damn, if this movie had Crash Corrigan in a gorilla suit it'd be perfect. Low-budget but fun, produced by somebody named (get this) Benedict Bogeaus and directed by (get THIS) Jacques Tourneur. Available on a DVD from VCI as a double-feature with something called Escape to Burma, another Bogeaus production. |
