OK, the contracts are signed and I can finally release this info from David Shepard: "Dear Jon, "The films in the present Albatros package are "THE LATE MATHIAS PASCAL LE BRASIER ARDENT (THE BURNING CRUCIBLE) KEAN GRIBICHE LES NOUVEAUX MESSIEURS (THE NEW GENTLEMEN). "Earlier, we released UN CHAPEAU DE PAILLE D'ITALIE (THE ITALIAN STRAW HAT) "And under contract, probably to come out early next year, is the serial LA MAISON DU MYSTERE (THE HOUSE OF MYSTERY) .... "Every one of these films approaches (in my opinion) the status of a masterpiece. And I think we're set to lose our shirts on them. "Just a guess, that the name comes from the airship that takes its passengers around the world in Jules Verne's "Robur the Conqurer." "The company started in Moscow as Ermolieff Film; on the heels of the 1917 revolution, they all fled to Yalta; when the Bolsheviks got there, on to Constantinople, then Marseilles, and finally arrived in Paris late in 1920. A couple of their Russian films circulate here and they are superb: QUEEN OF SPADES (1916) and the beautiful FATHER SERGIUS (1917), both with Mosjoukine." OK, now. You heard the man. We need to support this Flicker Alley release, so we can get the serial for dessert. I have seen Kean and it's great fun, so I expect the whole box will be as good or better. I have also seen The Italian Straw Hat, and think it's René Clair's best picture. Since it's Dave, the quality will be exceptional, and the music superb. I know how much trouble he takes on everything he releases, but this box is really a labor of love. He sent me the Blu-Ray of The Late Matthew Pascal and it's magnificent. |

Great news! I have several Flicker Alley releases, including MISS MEND and UN CHAPEAU DE PAILLE D'ITALIE, and they are terrific. What is the exact title for this boxed set? I want to make sure it's easy to find for ordering. |

I think Albatros will work as a keyword. If it doesn't, tell me and I'll e-mail him, or just google the Flicker Alley website. |

I had tried their website, but there is nothing about the release on it that I could find. From what I could tell, the website hasn't been updated since last September. And Albatros didn't work on Amazon, either. |

There won't be anything more on the web for at least a week or so. If you Google Flicker Alley, a screen will come up and on the right, click on flicker alley Albatros -- it will link you to Nitrateville, where there are some lovely stills from these films and some others. The stand-alone version of The Late Mathias Pascal is already out and Amazon has it. The Blu-ray, which David sent me, is from a 35mm negative, with the original tinting restored by following an original print in the Cinematheque Francaise collection. The picture itself is a tragicomedy from a novel by Luigi Pirandello, no less, about a man hemmed in by a humdrum life who reinvents himself and keeps on reinventing himself until he gets it right. The music is through-composed for harpsichord and full orchestra. The film is dominated by its lead actor, Ivan Mosjoukine, a White Russian who was sort of a cross between John Barrymore and Lon Chaney, and was wildly popular in Europe. There's no other silent actor like him. The film did well at the box office because of its star. Just so you know, I had nothing to do with this release. Those who did are the same folks who did Rescued from the Flames and The Italian Straw Hat. In other words, top of the line in quality. I do want this to succeed, but mainly so we can get more. Imagine a whole collection of material from the Cinematheque. Edited by panzer the great & terrible, Feb 17 2013, 06:26 AM.

Great to hear, I have both of those releases and love 'em. (And, not to be picky, it's actually called Saved From the Flames) |

Now updated at Flicker Alley's website: "French Masterworks: Russian Emigres in Paris 1923-1929", a 5-disc DVD box set, scheduled for release on April 9, 2013. Hmm, no Blu-ray release. Wondering if I should pick up The Late Mathias Pascal on Blu-ray yet (the reviews are pretty good), or just wait for it on DVD as part of the box set? Decisions, decisions... |

Thanks, MT. Having a title for the boxed set makes it much easier to find for online ordering. |

I hear you received your set from Flicker Alley, Mr P, glad to hear it. Can you find out from Dave if they will be offering the set on Amazon.ca? I see it is on Amazon.com, but shipping from the U.S. to Canada these days is quite expensive. |
