![]() Robert L. Lippert presents Jungle Goddess (1948) Dir. Lewis D. Collins George Reeves and Ralph Byrd run a small private air transport service in Africa; they get into the missing-persons business when a $20,000 reward is offered for a woman, dead or alive, who disappeared six years earlier after a plane crash in the jungle. Well, they find her alrighty, and she just couldn't BE any cuter. Not only THAT, but she's worshiped by the natives as a blonde goddess! Not only THAT, but all this power seems to have gone right to her head, because is SHE one nasty bitch. When Byrd, in a panic, kills one of the natives, she condemns him to death but spares George, not least of all because she thinks he's just the CUTEST thing. As it turns out, she's VERY anxious to get back to civilization and out of her Jungle Goddess gig, and she sees Superman and Dick Tracy as her meal ticket. Unfortunately, Ralph is a villain for once (the pencil mustache he's wearing really should've given him away) and that whole "dead" part of the "dead or alive" description of the reward appeals to him greatly. A nice, fun little picture from our friends at Lippert. Byrd is in full Clark Gable wannabe mode here, at least style-wise; don't work when he's the bad guy, though. Not only does he have a mustache, but he smokes a lot, shoots people in cold blood, schemes to kill off the blonde jungle tootsie, and keeps punching Superman in the face. Yikes. I hope kids didn't realize they were watching their favorite G-Man, they'd have thought he must be falling apart due to drink or something. Wanda McKay is the (very lovely) goddess. Lewis Collins directed, and I'm sure we'll all remember him from about a thousand Universal serials. He keeps things moving, that's for sure. Million dollar dialog: Byrd: "It's tough enough to get through that jungle without being dragged down by a dame!" McKay, when Reeves asked her if she prepared the supper herself: "Goddesses don't cook!" Reeves, later in that scene: "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse!" McKay, pointing to the entree: "It's zebra." This is a lovely print, and can be found on the VCI "George Reeves Double Feature" disc with 1948's Thunder in the Pines, also co-starring Ralph Byrd and probably filmed the same week, knowing Lippert. The main problem with it is that the wild animal appearances amount to no more than a few seconds of typical stock-footage shots. This really could've benefited from Steve Calvert or somebody in a gorilla suit. |

Ralph and George seemed friendly enough, early on in this film, and then it all falls apart, seemingly without and reason. Very strange. Wanda McKay was super cute though. |

This film (which I have not seen) gets a rating of 1.8 on IMDB (the lowest I have ever noted there). Perhaps it is the casting that gives it some appeal , as many of us were thrilled to see our childhood serial actors on other duties...... |

It's bad. It's not 1.8 bad. Maybe 3.0 bad. But, yes, the appeal is entirely in the cast. |

I gave it a 6/10, but I freely admit a star or two probably went to the leads, especially George Reeves. |

It was lampooned on MST3K so naturally a bunch of idiot fans of that show went to IMDB and gave it a 0 rating. |

I'm with Gravy in thinking IMDb ratings are pretty much nonsense. But the site does have a listing of films with the worst user-ratings, which you can find if you poke around a bit, and last time I looked, "Manos: Hands of Fate" was still the clear favorite among "classic" era films with a 1.7. (More recent endeavours rate even lower.) So cheer up, serial fans, life is good. |

I don't mind MST3K at all, but why someone would just assume that if they did an episode on it, it should be zero stars is beyond me. |

Actually, the lowest one can rate a film on IMDb is 1/10. |

It Conquered the World and The Mole People - both lampooned on that show - both get ratings in the 4s on IMDB. It! The Terror from Beyond Space - certainly no great improvement in quality or whatever - gets 6 something. |
