Olive Films has licensed Betty from Paramount, and in July, will be releasing 12 of her early cartoons, restored in 4K from, they tell us, "original negatives and fine grains."

4 K is some new higher definition system but will it be compatible with the current technology ie high def and 1080p blu ray as this is the first I've heard of a 4 K release???

It's not a 4K release. They are merely mastering the video in 4K and then reducing that to 1080 for the Blu-Ray. There is nothing new about 4K mastering. It has been used for a number of years. For instance, the last Wizard of Oz Blu-Ray from Warner was mastered in 4K. There are many other examples that can be found. There have even been some instances of 6k and 8k remastering.

The advantage of the higher resolution mastering is that it usually (but not always) results in some improvements to the Blu-Ray picture quality. It also has real advantages to the studios for digital archival purposes. 4k resolution is basically equal to the picture quality inherent in 35mm film. 70mm sources would require something more like 8k mastering to preserve its full quality digitally.

There seems to be some movement on this, though, since I believe 4K TV's are available now and the games people and BD standards committee are scrambling to catch up.

Personally, I'm much more interested in my own IMAX home theatre, which is now available according to Friday's WSJ. If you have a spare 500 square foot room in your house and $2 million, you might consider going this route also. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Cruise have signed up.

I've got the 500 square feet but unfortunately not the 2 million. Alas. :(

The Animation Scoop blog lists the twelve titles for this disc:

CHESS NUTS (1932)
BETTY BOOP, M.D. (1932)
BETTY BOOP'S BAMBOO ISLE (1932)
BETTY BOOP FOR PRESIDENT (1932)
BETTY BOOP'S PENTHOUSE (1933)
BETTY BOOP'S BIRTHDAY PARTY (1933)
BETTY BOOP'S MAY PARTY (1933)
BETTY BOOP'S HALLOWE’EN PARTY (1933)
BETTY BOOP'S RISE TO FAME (1934)
BETTY BOOP'S TRIAL (1934)
BETTY BOOP'S LIFE GUARD (1934)
THE FOXY HUNTER (1937)

I'm definitely getting and hope Olive Films does well enough to justify continued volumes. Amazon regularly lists new packagings of the PD shorts (some including what seem to be copyrighted titles), and I worry that this will get lost in the crowd.

Great news! Bimbo's Initiation in Blu-Ray. I first saw it between sets at the Fillmore East on a night when an unknown band called The Allman Brothers opened for Taj Mahal, followed by B. B. King, but the Boop cartoon was what I remembered. They also showed the first chapter of Daredevils of the Red Circle that night. Bill Graham sure knew how to hire the right people and let them do their thing.

Well, it's not like Boop is one of life's mysteries. I've had that French box ever since the Squadron days. I bought it, and then I bought the OPPO player, and everything changed. Now I even have foreign flicks without subtitles. You pick up French and Japanese, Swedish and Italian that way.

Hey, Paul, which Oppo do you have? If it is a Blu-Ray player, do you have a region-free mod for Blu-Ray as well as DVD?
