Just finished the Blu-ray (moments ago). Wow. Great film, despite much of the primitive acting - laughs, drama, action, and simply astonishing sets and big-screen splendor. A true epic. I'll write more on a formal review. Wanted to say - the restoration is absolutely stunning, stunning, stunning in HD. I've never seen anything this old look this good. Easily takes the lead in the "Best Blu-ray of the Year" race. Comes with two bonus Griffith features, The Mother and the Law and The Fall of Babylon, both of which sound as though they were cut from this feature. I've had my eye on Cohen Media Group for some time now, and their BDs have never disappointed and have frequently astonished me. |

The Mother and the Law and The Fall of Babylon are indeed made largely from INTOLERANCE footage, with some outtakes which are now frequently shoehorned into the picture, but weren't in the original release. Problem is, Griffith kept "improving" this feature (and Birth of a Nation) by adding and subtracting footage, so we don't really have a definitive version of either film. Fortunately, though, the last four reels, which are the fun part, are pretty much the same in all versions. I could watch that part of the picture every week for the rest of my life, so it's good to know the Blu-ray is worth having.

And boy, is it. A fine Blu of one of the greatest films ever. I could see wallpaper patterns and tweed and all kinda stuff. Granted, there is missing footage (maybe two minutes) and there is repeated footage (where the same guy's head gets cut off), but these are small things. It's early on, but I bet this will be my DVD of the year vote. And hell, the thing is 100 years old. Buy it! The last 40 minutes are astounding. This movie is far more interesting than The Birth of a Nation. |

Add me to the chorus. I picked up the new Blu release of INTOLERANCE and it is a beautiful presentation. The film itself is highly engrossing. Highest recommendations. |
