This looks like a (even) cheap(er) ripoff of the LittleToughGuys/Dead End/East Side Kids. Anyone know anything about this? Was it part of a series? How bad is it?

Also anyone know anything about the company releasing this. Looks like a new public domain DVD issuer but I've never heard of them.

There were three Gas House Kids movies released during the 1946-47 season. They were just what you said. Billy Halop was in the first one but was smart enough to drop out. The core group included former Our Gang kids Carl Switzer (still playing Alfalfa) and Tommy Bond, as well as Bennie Bartlett (who appeared in a couple mid-Forties East Side Kids movies) and a real no-talent named Rudy Wissler.

The movies are practically unwatchable. IIRC, one of them has an old-dark-house angle but is painfully unfunny nonetheless. They're not even worth the price of a DVD; imagine how some of us felt years ago when we paid $75 each for them in 16mm. That was the risk you took in those pre-cable, pre-video days when you were curious about obscure stuff like this.

Hey, I take issue with your comment re Rudy Wissler. Knew him as an adult & he had a terrific tenor voice.

I actually saw one of these three PRC productions (don't remember which) as a kid in a theatre, yet.

Well, then, I'll say that as an actor he was a terrific singer.

He provided the voice of the young Jolson in THE JOLSON STORY.

Thanks for the info, RR. I figured you might be the one to know about this. A definite pass then.

Methinks Ed is being unduly rough on these bijous. With auteurs like Sam Newfield, William Beaudine & Edward L. Cahn handling the directorial chores, how can they miss?
