I had 2 great excursions into Nashville to see silent films with live scores. First up, the wife and I went to the Belcourt Theater to see Lon Chaney's He Who Gets Slapped. The film was presented by a live, original score by the illustrious Alloy Orchestra. The story of a man (Chaney) who has his idea stolen from him by his mentor, and then the mentor slaps him during the idea's presentation in front of a board of scientists, and this humiliation sends the man to be a circus clown, who constantly gets slapped during every performance. There were several scenes with Chaney in clown make up, spinning a ball on his fingertip, and the music to these scenes was hauntingly presented. I wish we had sat in different seats, because we could only see one member of the trio of musicians, and I would've liked to have seen all three. This was the largest crowd I've seen at the Belcourt with the exception of the premiere of Metropolis with the lost footage. One of the great times I've had at a theater. On October 30th, the wife and I went to the Schermerhorn (home of the Nashville Symphony) to see a live, original organ accompaniment to Chaney's Hunchback Of Notre Dame. The organist (I don't recall his name and I've misplaced my program) was dressed in a tux with tails, and yes, he flopped the tails out with both hands to sit on the organ bench. The organist started the show with what I say is the most famous Halloween music of all time--Toccata And Fugue in D MInor by Bach. The film's score was well presented and was received by several standing ovations at the films end by the mix-and-match crowd, who were attired in everything from tuxes to jeans to Halloween costumes. Just a damn good reason to get out of the house on a cold October evening. Seems that classic films are alive and well here in the Nashville area. |

I'm so glad you got to see He Who Gets Slapped with the Alloys. That combo was one of my all-time greatest movie highs. The Belcourt is doing fine stuff. I saw the Metropolis restoration at the same place, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, and when it was over I went up front to introduce myself to the Alloys. I saw the score they used for that three-hour picture, and it was like two pages. Those guys are brilliant. Edited by panzer the great & terrible, Jan 19 2014, 07:59 PM.

When I saw the Restored Metropolis, it was without the AO, but they came to town later for their live score of the film, but sadly I wasn't able to attend. |

Hard for me to say because I could only see one of the three members from my vantage point. I saw keyboards and I distinctly heard a snare drum (I heard it every time the circus performers filled the tent). Here's a link to their site: AO After looking at the site, I think the haunting music I heard was from a saw. Yes, I typed saw! |

The musical saw is a legitimate instrument, even if only rarely used except for comedic purposes. |

Yep. That's probably the closest thing to the musical saw. The glass harmonica has a bit of the same sound, IIRC. |

i know a guy who's pretty good on saw. He plays Stairway to Heaven to show off. The Alloys have a bewildering array of percussion instruments. They sound like no other band. |
