Well, when you get right down to it, many of the projects we're discussing are imaginary. The ones that actually almost got made, hundreds of them, don't get talked about because the money guys don't want us hearing about how dumb they were.

Speaking of that, how about the pictures that actually did get made and were then shelved permanently, like for instance the "serious" Jerry Lewis picture THE CLOWN THAT CRIED?

Speaking of animated features, there is Bob Clampett's attempt to bring John Carter of Mars to the big screen. ERB was supposed to be interested, but nobody at the time would fund an animated feature aimed at adults.

(And speaking of ERB, I've always wonder what Tarzan the Apeman would have been like if they had cast Gable as the hero instead of Weissmuller. Somehow, I think they would have given him more dialog than they gave Johnny.)

One more staring us in the face: The unmade scifi epic at the heart of ARGO.

There was an actual project, for which they commissioned Jack Kirby to produce concept art. From what I remember of a long-ago scifi magazine article, the ambitious plan was to build the futuristic city that served as the main setting and turn it into a tourist attraction after the movie was released. They never pulled the money together, but there was enough done that it could be seemingly raised from the dead as an actual production.

Are you sure they were actually going to make that film, or wasn't the whole "production" a ruse to get the Americans out of Iran?

Found these:

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/10/04/argo-documentary-kickstarter-judd-ehrlich/

If the Iranians dug deeper on the production's history, they would have been more afraid of swindlers than spies.

After reading the script and picturing Jerry Lewis in the lead you might see why the Day the Clown Cried was not released

Sure. But who gave the green light to such a batty project? A lot of film history is about stupid decisions by coke-headed executives.

I saw a special about J. D. Salinger the other day on PBS, and many people wanted to do a film about the book (Salinger even received a phone call from Jerry Lewis), but the author was dead set against a film of his cherished work.
It's like Rodney King used to say, "Can't we all get a bong."

He hated movies and even wrote about it.

Catcher in the Rye would have made a lousy picture anyway. I think Salinger was right not to sell it to Hollywood. He was a snob and on the screen that would have showed, so the scriptwriter would have had no option but to change things around, which would have messed up the story. Also it's a first person narrative and a lot of the humor comes from Holden's naive idealism. How would you get that across in a screenplay?
