Imagine Monogram Pictures deciding they wanted to make their own version of It Happened One Night, only without any of the talented cast or crew of THAT picture. Ah, you need not imagine at all - welcome to this thing. Beautiful rich heiress Anne Nagel has been stood up at the altar - again - by her unreliable fiance, Henry Mollison. She decides to teach him a lesson by marrying her best friend, Warren Hull, and then, once her husband gets all jealous and realizes what a fool he's been, he'll chase them down on their Honeymoon and sweep her away. Or something like that. The upshot is that Warren REALLY loves Anne, but when he discovers the Honeymoon's going to have none of the action of, say, The Spider's Web, so to speak, he goes and find some women who are a little more appreciative of him being Warren Hullish. When the fiance shows up, Anne has a tough cherce to make, because she is kinda-sorta realizing that maybe she hasn't been appreciative enough of her best friend and SAY, I felt I'd rather wasted an hour watchin' this thing, I see no reason to go on any further with this review. Funny, after recently watching a very good William Nigh film, I find this movie, if not completely destroying my confidence in him, certainly demonstrates the salient fact that B-movie directors rose and fell on the material at hand. |

Years ago I bought a 16mm print of A Bride for Henry on the strength of the outtakes from it that can be found in the famous Monogram blooper reel from the Thirties. I learned to my dismay that those bloopers are far more entertaining than anything in the finished film. |

Never heard of a Monogram blooper reel, RR, would love to hear more info on this one, including its availability. |

With what gets left in, the mind boggles at what the director had to yell "CUT! Let's do it again, folks" at. |

How / where / why did you come up with this one, LG? I'm new to the Monogram blooper reel, also. Of course, most Monogram films seem like bloopers from start to finish. |

Silly me, I thought as a matter of policy Monograms left all the bloopers in. |

There were actually two versions of the Monogram blooper reel, but the one that used to be available in 16mm and on VHS tape was titled Things You Never See in Movies. It's about ten or eleven minutes of late Thirties Monogram bloopers with a minute or two of outtakes from My Man Godfrey. The Godfrey bloopers show Carole Lombard at her profane best, but the Monogram outtakes are great. It took me years to identify all the movies they're from, but it was worth the effort. A few of the highlights.... From Boys' Reformatory (1939): Frankie Darro is making a heartfelt confession to Grant Withers but keeps stumbling over his lines. When he exasperatingly cries, "I'll be a son of a bitch!" Withers asks, "What color?" From The Mystery of Mr. Wong (1939): Boris Karloff walks to an apparently unlocked safe and tugs on the handle. The door sticks and Karloff exclaims, "The goddamned thing's locked!" From Rose of the Rio Grande (1938): John Carroll rushes to free the captive Movita, whose hands are tied behind her back. He fumbles with the knots, mutters, and finally erupts, "What the hell did that guy do to this goddamned rope?" From Streets of New York (1939): Dick Purcell rattles off a series of pithy lines to Jackie Cooper and ends the speech with, "...and I don't know what the hell else to say!" There are numerous flubs featuring John Carroll and Jack Randall. The Bride for Henry bloopers are generally mild except for one that shows Claudia Dell stumbling as she tries to negotiate a short staircase while wearing a long gown. Over the years I showed that reel to dozens of people at various parties. It seldom got the reaction I hoped for, which puzzled me until I realized that my "civilian" friends had no idea who most of these actors were. But I'm sure it would fare better among Balconeers. It's got to be available on DVD from one of the bootleggers, maybe from Alpha Video or Sinister Cinema. |

I have seen it. It's a lot of fun. You have to imagine Mr. Karloff astonishingly exclaiming "The goddamned thing's locked!" in that lisp of his, with all the excitement of someone saying, "Oh dear, I apparently got a spot of soup on my tie." He must've been a dear to work with. Mr. Hale, the answer to each and every one of your questions is: "That's how I roll." Edited by Laughing Gravy, Mar 23 2014, 06:16 PM.

I knew we could count on RR. for background info. Thanks for that. Does anyone know if there is a DVD release of these bloopers? |

Despite what Mr. H. referred to as its 'vacuum' -- I love this website, if only for threads like this one, which pop up more often than we have any reason to expect they would. |

Oops, missed that line, the first time reading. Thanks, RR. A quick check of Amazon, Alpha and Sinister Cinema websites shows nothing available under that title. Too bad, it would be interesting to see. |

As to the "vacuum", LG, things are clearly more fun when you're around and participating. I've always enjoyed chatting with you, and you have a gift for starting conversations, being a Renaissance man and all. |

Well, I dunno about Ren... Ren... what you said, but I sure will watch anything, won't I? Films like this are in the public domain of course, and so can be found on those cheesy cheap multi-sets. I think I paid fifty cents for five of these things at a junk store. I got taken, of course, but I like to contribute to the economy. Yep, "A Bride for Henry". |
