I was just saying that I prefer GB over RP, in other words I find GB to be more enjoyable (fun) than RP. This means I find GB emphasizes fun more than RP, for me.

I agree with Bats. Gang Busters is the closest there is to a horror serial, but with a few good laughs. Radio Patrol is an overlong bore. If you flip a coin you run a 50% chance of making a mistake, IMO.

Well, I've seen both (alone, not with a group, which of course makes a difference) and all I remembered was the "Little Cairo" sections of one of 'em, which should tell you somethin'.

This is a tough choice.

Actually, I much prefer Radio Patrol instead of Gang Busters. It's a lot more fun and more imaginative than Gang Busters. Kent Taylor is good in the lead role, but I think that the serial is highly over-rated. It could be because Radio Patrol was one of the first serials I watched in the very early days of TV around 1948 or so. It was part of that package that included the Flash Gordon trilogy, the two Don Winslows, Red Barry and Ace Drummond. In Chicago, at least, Tim Tyler's Luck was not part of that package. We didn't see that one until a few years later. And, for some reason, Buck Rogers wasn't shown in the Chicago area until a few years after we finally got to see Tim Tyler's Luck.

Maybe I'll let Peter the Volvo Repair Guy choose...

That's probably a main reason, you saw one as a child (or a lot younger).

BATMAN is one of the first serials I ever saw, and remains a favourite. While some other highly regarded serials (such as SPY SMASHER), while enjoyable, didn't live up to the online hype and wouldn't make my Top 10.

I saw both GB and RP in the last 5 years or so, for the first time. For my money, GB is way more enjoyable than RP. But, your mileage may vary.

I can say with absolute certainty that the first serial I saw was Cody of the Pony Express, which I saw in a theater. I don't still love it, but it gave me a desire for more at the time. The first one I loved was Undersea Kingdom which I saw in re-release. I do still love that one. I don't say it's Citizen Kane, but I love it. Batman and Robin was one of the first too, and I still adore it even though it mostly sucks. Didn't catch up with the complete Batman until I was grown, but I had the four-reel silent abridgment long before that.

We have a winner! Peter looked at all of my 12 and 13 episode serials that we hadn't watched (most all) and narrowed it down to two, both of which he thought looked good. The winner to be announced soon on the website.

...and that turned out to be GANG BUSTERS. His second choice was the 1945 SECRET AGENT X-9.

Excellent, I hope Pete likes it and it lives up to his expectations. Looking forward to his feedback.

Both of his choices were excellent. Sounds like a smart guy.

I wasn't able to get into Radio Patrol -- didn't get past the first chapter. The comic never did anything for me either. It was so crudely drawn.

The last time I saw Radio Patrol was in the VHS days. It was a VCI VHS, in fact. I seemed to remember mostly liking it, but the print was too dark. I have the Serial Squadron version, but have never watched it. I hear VCI has a good DVD of it, too. Maybe I'll upgrade the upgrade.

If you already have the SS version, there is no need to upgrade. It has great picture/sound quality. The serial itself is only so-so for me.

I have heard the VCI version is substantially better. Point in fact, most of VCI's versions are substantially better.
