Valley of Vanishing Men
Batman
The Phantom
Monster and the Ape
The Vigilante
The Sea Hound
Batman and Robin
Adventures of Sir Galahad
Pirates of the High Seas

Gravy, you recommend RADAR PATROL VS. SPY KING and PANTHER GIRL OF THE KONGO, but not THE FIGHTING DEVIL DOGS, KING OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED, ADVENTURES OF RED RYDER,JUNGLE GIRL, KING OF THE MOUNTIES, DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST, or THE MASKED MARVEL???

We watch serials one chapter a week over three or four months, you know. A level of goofy fun really helps. You'll note I don't like a lot of Western serials.

Got both of them. I like them both. In Sir Galahad, I really liked seeing Charles King play a good guy. He does well at playing a more light hearted/humerous character. I can only think of a few times he got to do that.

You dont find a whole lot of goofiness in the western serials, well, at least not intentionally. :D Not sure if it qualifies as a western or not, but I just finished watching The Sign of the Wolf. That guy really needs to start leaving his windows open.

Deadwood Dick is probably my favorite Western serial.

Gravy, a few years ago somewhere you posted that KING OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED was a lousy serial. I always wanted to reply and ask what you didn't like about it. Also, what did you think of the sequel, KING OF THE MOUNTIES?

Deadwood Dick is probably my favorite Western serial.
I have Deadwood Dick, but havent watched it yet. I gotta admit I do love old westerns. Western serials probably arent my favorite type of serial, but I do still really enjoy them.

DEADWOOD DICK somehow really works for me. The Skull is a very effective villain, with the mood created by the music and lighting. However, I really don't accept Don Douglas as the hero, he looked to be too much of a milquetoast person to be fighting five crooks at once. I thought he fit in much better as the butler in THE SPIDER'S WEB.

Back in the day serials were mostly shown with a western feature, so the western serials got dissed. These days, a serial like Red Ryder, The Mystery Rider, or anything with Buck Jones is more likely to get respect. Except from Gravy of course.

I respect 'em, I just don't watch 'em. Audiences these days don't connect with 'em. Well, MY audience doesn't. They like Zorro well enough, though.

Universals I recommend:

Gordon of Ghost City
Pirate Treasure
The Vanishing Shadow
The Red Rider
Tailspin Tommy in the Great Air Mystery
Flash Gordon
Ace Drummond
Jungle Jim
Radio Patrol
Tim Tyler's Luck
Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars
Scouts to the Rescue
Buck Rogers
The Phantom Creeps
The Green Hornet
Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe
Junior G-Men
The Green Hornet Strikes Again
Sky Raiders
Sea Raiders
Gang Busters
Junior G-Men of the Air
Adventures of Smilin' Jack
Adventures of the Flying Cadets
The Great Alaskan Mystery
Mystery of the River Boat
The Master Key
Secret Agent X-9 (1945 version)

Sheesh, many of these are cheesier than the OTHER ones...
