The picture is complete and pristine, and Grood meticulously recreated the missing sound. He did the voice of Robert Frazer, and did an amazing job. |

OH, sure. I thought it was really well done. But I still wouldn't show it to casual movie fans. |

We're pretty hard core, actually, but as I mentioned before, we're not much into Western serials. |

Gravy, Of the serials on your list I'd recommend the following: The Painted Stallion King of the Forest Rangers Trader Tom of the China Seas (only because of how well Republic was able to weave stock footage from Drums of Fu Manchu and Haunted Harbor into the serial and make it interesting.) Gravy: King of the Forest Rangers is well directed but the principals (Larry Thompson & Stuart Hamblen) are just so bland (even poor). It's a good story but as far as mountie serials go (KFR is obviously one, albeit without the RCMP mentionings), I feel that Jim Brannon's Dangerous of the Canadian Mounties (1948) is better & worth a look - fun outdoorsy entertainment .... Regarding others on your list, what about "Tom Trader" - Harry Lauter is pretty good in this nicely balanced 50s Republic My viewing of the latter comes well remembered here in Aus. Desmond Tester was a major UK child star - but decamped to Aus when TV started up in the late 1950s. He fronted an afternoon TV game show called "Cabbage Quiz": contestants who got a question wrong, got to carry a cabbage - so if you missed a few, pretty soon you were carrying heaps of cabbages! (Drop one and you were gone) Half way through the program, we got the serial and Desmond introduced it with "Here's Tom Trader!" Gotta love those days! Trev |

Well, there are some pretty good Republic serials that I think the Gang would like that I've seen and they haven't, including Purple Monster Strikes and the aforementioned Haunted Harbor itself. Most of the current gang haven't seen The Tiger Woman, or Perils of Nyoka, either. I am thinking that Zorro Rides Again and a Jesse james serial might go over well. |

My vote would be for Nyoka. It was the first serial I owned and is still my favorite. |

I've checked just about every online list of movie serials None of them list either of the Famous Five Movie Serials (mentioned in this thread above, 2 days ago) And I can't see a reason They tick all of the boxes (except perhaps being not a Hollywood production) Can anyone provide a reason that disqualifies them from being on the list - 'cause, for the life if me, I cannot see one) Trev |

I've been thinking about watching The Black Widow lately. Not quite sure why. |

Just a guess, Trev, but I think the list of 231 sound serials has a common thread of being products of the U.S.A. I believe there are several British serials, plus some other European ones, and they are also not included on the "official" list. |

THE BLACK WIDOW is a pretty good serial, even though the hero, Bruce Edwards, and villain Theodore Gottlieb were weak. Republic made up for those bad casting decisions with Carol Forman as Sombra, the Black Widow, and some nice plot twists. For something different, instead of the hero being a government agent, he was a mystery writer hired by a newspaper to solve the "Black Widow murders." According to Jack Mathis, the first day of shooting for THE BLACK WIDOW, was on April 11, 1947, that was the day I was born. |

I used to think that Universal produced Detective Lloyd solely for the U.K., but apparently it had some bookings in the States as well. But I don't know if it was "officially" included in that year's serial lineup. Universal imported a serial from Britain circa 1918 titled Boy Scouts to the Rescue. It was heavily promoted in Universal Weekly but doesn't seem to have gotten many bookings here. |

Perhaps it's a matter of whether a movie serial was show in the US dictates if it can be included within the "official list" of movie serials - mere qualification by any other measure would appear to not apply ...which is bit spurious to my mind ... The Famous Five movie serials had spoken English (of course) which removed the need for subtitling or dubbing - a requirement that may have disqualified European serial productions I would venture that neither of these UK serials were shown in US theatres The Famous Five movie serials were very "British" - but nonetheless very entertaining I remain closely "connected" to both serials because of the Enid Blyton books My sister read just about all of The Famous Fives - I tried them but was too young/immature to appreciate them. So the first "novel" that I actually recall reading was one of Blytons "alternate" series (for kids like me) The Secret Seven (my sister looked down on me for reading it) Trev Edited by LaneCarson, May 30 2014, 10:19 PM.
