I've been watching this serial again and was curious if anyone could identify the origin of the stock footage in chapter 11 where marines attack a fishing village. The footage was also used in the '36 John Wayne 'B "Sea Spoilers."

I did a search, I can't find anything, but what I have read makes it sound like the scene was shot for the John Wayne movie. It's on the internet, so it must be true...

Yes, that footage was shot for Sea Spoilers.

Quick, sell it to me, before the internet hears about it.

It connects Manhattan to Brooklyn, and I figure it's worth about 5K.

Great deal, Pa Stark will be sending you a check, just forward the deed to the Batcave.

I didn't think they would shoot such an involved scene for a cheaply made 'B, but who am I to question the omniscience of the internet???
BTW, in watching 'Winslow I wondered whether he or Ace Drummond holds the record for picking himself up and dusting himself off after bone crushers that would kill mere mortals. In those serials Universal seems to have cheated more brazenly than the other companies.

The internet knows all. Wikipedia says so, making it gospel truth.

As for the pick-yourself-up-and-dust-yourself-off cliffhangers, I have seen ACE DRUMMOND, in a really bad copy, so hard to remember. I have both Winslow serials, haven't watched them yet. But, I do recall that THE SHADOW could give both gentlemen a run for their money in the aforementioned category. If dusting off falling ceilings counts.

I asked Sea Spoilers associate producer (and uncredited second-unit director) Paul Malvern about this last-reel sequence, and he rather blithely said half the film's budget went into staging and shooting it.

Also, you have to remember that Sea Spoilers was the first film in the Trem Carr group and therefore would have been the one shown to exhibitors to get them to book all six. The inaugural entry in a "B" series almost always had better story and production values than later entries. Can you imagine anybody buying the Wayne series if the first one had been Idol of the Crowds? Brrrrr!

For what it's worth, Billy Bakewell was very fond of Sea Spoilers. He thought that he had a good role and that he nailed it.

Thanks for the information! I enjoyed those Trem Carr/John Wayne Universal 'B's. I think I enjoyed "I Cover the War" and "Conflict" the most, the latter for its turn of the century setting. 'War has a goofy anachronistic setting: an 1800's "Light Brigade" cavalry in 1937 Arabia. The one film in the group that I haven't seen and which doesn't seem to be available in the grey market is "Adventure's End."

Have you ever seen Columbia's Shadow serial? Victor Jory gets up unscathed after buildings fall on him IIRC. And of course there are the Spider serials where he is exchanging bullets with villains from only 10-15 feet apart and never gets hit. You really have to suspend disbelief for serials like these. :P :P

No Bats, just use my payment service, Pay Pa. Nobody knows how to give you the business like I do.

Speaking of Don Winslow, where was the stock footage from in chapter 11 of DON WINSLOW OF THE COAST GUARD with the white taxi speeding backwards down a steep city street, and plunge off a pier into the bay?
