Most Dangerous Game works for me, although I wouldn’t call it a classic. It's very pacey, Fay Wray screams less, and, most importantly, I didn’t see it 8 million times on Million Dollar Movie when I was a kid. Of course, it will never have Kong's iconic status, and I'm not sure comparisons are particularly useful. I can't really bear to watch Kong any more. The first and last half hours are still great, but the middle section, when they're endlessly fighting monsters and screaming, just seems to drag on and on. BTW, the BD of "Game" that David Shepard put out a while back is quite nice, although at the time it didn’t strike me as a significant improvement over the Criterion edition. (It includes a strange documentary from the 20's or 30's called "Gow the Headhunter", which has had several exploitation re-issues under different titles; as I recall the disc print was a 50's version. Pretty boring, actually, and not particularly recommended, except for the shock value of discovering an item totally out of left field. Still, nice of him to include it.) |

I have that BD version, by Dave Shepard, and I must say the sound is especially improved from the Criterion edition (which I also have). As for the GOW documentary, I found it fascinating and recommend it. But to each his own, Mr Hale. |

I'm with Bats, as I often am. I'm curious, Frank: how do you define classic? |

Oh, that's an easy one, Paul. A classic is a film that everybody needs to see at least once. (Like Lawrence of Arabia, Gravy.) I don’t think "Game" quite makes my particular cut-off, although I think it's quite good. But if you guys think it's a classic, it's OK with me. It certainly has a lot of descendants. Good short story, too. |

Run For the Sun (1956) lists Richard Connell's novel in the credits - with the screenplay coming from the director - the talented Roy Boulting. A super cast headed by Richard Widmark, Trevor Howard, Jane Greer & Peter Van Eyck in a luxuriously filmed "jungle chase", shot on location in Mexico, in Technicolor & CinemaScope. Trevor Howard stars as Browne, a British traitor, hiding in the Mexican jungle with his wartime Nazi compatriots, Van Anders (Peter Van Eyck) and Jan (Carlos Henning). Mike Latimer (Richard Widmark) and Katy Conners (Jane Greer) are aboard a plane which is forced to land in Browne's domain and are captured by the villains. Browne offers his captives an hour's head-start to freedom, then sets his hunting dogs on the hapless pair. So, whilst Run For the Sun (1956) borrows a lot from The Most Dangerous Game concept, it nonetheless, is a well made adventure yarn in its own right with stunning cinematography provided by Oscar winner Joseph LaShelle Trev |
