AC even apologizes for the lower quality of the 2nd disc at it's beginning. What they used is an old worn print for the 2nd disc. It's not that bad though. The picture is still relatively sharp and is highly watchable. But it does have wear marks in the form of black rain

There's also a selection of five lobby cards from various chapters, a 384 page script, including a scene breakdown, for the lost film Terrible People (1928). OK, here's the brand spanking new official Balcony thread for rating the quality of sound serial DVD releases.

I've taken out the column that LG had on rating the serial itself, as we have enough threads around here to discuss that, and it would be better to keep this thread for just DVD quality.

So, if anyone has a rating they would like to add, just post it here and I will add it to the list.

Great job, Mr. Bats. I hope people find it useful, and I think it will especially pay off on the PD serials.

Well, I think we can all agree that the old Image DVD's are still the go-to edition for the 3 Flash Gordon serials; and VCI for the 2 Secret Agent X-9's and the 2 Green Hornets. All seem to be sourced from 35mm film.

I've started to fill in the chart with some of the no-brainers (the Image Flash's, the VCI Hornets and Secret Agent X-9 - thanks for those Frank - as well as the Sony Batman and Warner Superman serials, plus a couple of others that came to mind). I haven't put ratings down on all of them, partly because I can't remember how good they were for quality. Some I have rated for quality, but if other feel I have rated too high or too low, I am willing to go with a general consensus.

Also, when it comes to extras, I've been checking online to see what extras the listed editions have. If I've missed something, please let me know.

I'd say 8, maybe, on the ones I mentioned. But it's been a while since I've seen any of them, so you may want some other input.

I'll be interested to see what comes up on The Lone Ranger. The version I saw was in the Mill Creek Entertainment collection "Lone Ranger - The Legend Begins", and although I found it close to unwatchable (1, at best, from a VHS source), at the time I had the impression it was the best available. There may be other options by now.

Thanks, Frank.

I have both the Mill Creek DVD version of TLR and the Serial Squadron version. In my notes I have written "Mill Creek - passable at best, SS version decent, upgrade if perfect". So a decent for me is around a 7/10. I'll put that in for now, until I hear otherwise.

I forgot to add, Mr Hale, that the SS is now offering a new, upgraded release of THE LONE RANGER. For folks like me, who bought their last release of TLR, we get it upgraded for $13, while first timers can get it for $30. I was really happy with the first release, but I will go for the upgrade, I really like the serial, too.

The best issue of The Black Whip I've seen is the Serial Squadron's. I would rate it as a nine. Another I'd call a nine is trev's Mysterious Island. His Invisible Monster is an eight. Nice transfer. None of these three have extras. Another nine would be the Artisan release of Adventures of Captain Marvel. It has closed captioning and a trailer.

Thanks, Mr P. I will add those.

As for Captain Marvel, I have that edition, too, and it is swell. However, I also have the old SS version, which is no longer available. I believe that one may be superior in picture/sound quality. So, for the purposes of this list, do we want to list the best version, or the best version that is still available?

Note that The Invisible Monster & Mysterious Island mentioned by Panzer are earlier masteries from 2010. New software developed in 2012 and used exclusively here since early 2013 have delivered vastly improved masteries than the earlier ones

Nothing ever stays still ...

I have a problem in providing serials which are going to be bootlegged
This so-called "Trading Group" is an anathema to me ......

As it should be. I can't think of any good reason to rip off honest people doing a good job. Even certain somewhat dishonest people like Grood deserve to reap the rewards of their labors. Anybody who copies the work of a really good guy like trev deserves something lingering, with boiling oil.

How's your copy of Deadwood Dick, trev?

I think the individual who made that trading suggestion was reprimanded by Gravy for his lamentable lapse. I trust the rest of the regulars here would not be so venal as to cause you any grief, Trev. In fact, my guess is you will getting some new trade from this exercise.

Since the Serial Squadron is popping up on a lot of these, are there any outside sources for SS product now that Prince Barin has folded, for those of us who prefer not to deal directly with Eric?

My impression was that the SS and VCI versions of Holt of the Secret Service were basically identical, and derived from the same Screen Gems TV print. That would give SS haters another option

I think it should be noted that Eric messed with the credits on Captain America.

I'd probably lower the assessment of Artisan's Captain Marvel to maybe a 6 or 7. It came from the laserdisc master and didn’t really look good to me on DVD. AFAIK it's also OOP.

I'm currently struggling through VCI's Terry and the Pirates. I think it's the only DVD available. 5 or 6.

Really appreciate your efforts, Bats. There will be an initial flurry, then things will settle down to something more sustainable. So pace yourself as you see fit.

First off, thanks again, Frank. I'm glad the effort is appreciated, it really could be a handy guide to the best DVD copies out there. We just need a collaborative effort from everyone interested. Your input so far has been great.

Sorry, I don't know of another outside source for Serial Squadron DVDs, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. Can anyone else help here?

I didn't know about the Holt origins, so if true, I can certainly add VCI to the chart, giving people a choice.

Agreed about the credits manipulation for CAPTAIN AMERICA, I will certainly add that. If I remember, he added something to the credits, but I can't remember offhand what is was, is that correct? I can check my copy, to add to the notes, unless someone else remembers exactly what it is. For me, personally, it's not a huge deal, something he does to ward off bootleggers. I prefer it over the logo in the corner solution that Alpha and VCI (for a brief time) have done.

I agree about your assessment of Artisan's release of TAoCM. It's fine, but not as sharp as the SS version, which I would rate a solid 9. Since both are OOP, though the Artisan version is available on the third-party market, I will post the SS version in the chart. I think this chart should reflect the best version that has been made available, whether still available now or not. Unless others feel different, I am flexible.

Thanks for the info on Terry and the Pirates, I'll post that VCI is the only one to get, but wait until you finish for a final rating.
