40 years ago no one had anything good to say about HOLT OF THE SECRET SERVICE, now people say they get a kick out of it. Best part is the play acting bickering between Holt and heroine Evelyn Brent pretending they are tough gangsters. Stanley Blystone get one of his best roles as the ruler of the island, he really get to throw his weight around. Also, in the last chapter Holt doesn't fight the usual five heavies at once, he fights, and defeats nine. Holt was hands down the toughest hero ever.

Well, the ladies in attendance aren't Wild about serials anyway. But maybe Nyoka would go over.

Don't know about the 40 years ago, Pa, but I definitely agree with the feelings about it today. HOLT OF THE SECRET SERVICE is a blast and one of the best serials I have seen, so far (out of about 100).

Holt and Brent are perfect together, one of the best (if not the best) sound serial couples.

Yes they are. No other serial did the hero and heroine have such a relationship, even if it was just to throw the heavies off.

Well, they both could act, which is often a plus.

VCI has released two new serials for December 2014. LAW of the WILD and The ADVENTURES of FRANK MERRIWELL.

I've watched both and rate them...

LAW of the WILD
rating: 8
1 DVD-R disc
extras: None

FRANK MERRIWELL
rating: 7.5
1 DVD-R disc
extras: None.
(note: The beginning of Chapter 1 is pretty chewed up, lots of splices. Chapters 2-12 look and sound very good with a few scratches throughout.)

Thanks for the heads-up, I've been wondering where to get a copy of that.

Today in my local independent music store, I was surprised to find, of all things, a brand-new copy of Mysterious Island from Cheezy Flicks. I didn't buy it (I like the AC Comics just fine) but it's out there. It was $15.

I agree, the AC Comics release is splendid, no need to look for an upgrade.

I loved that serial as a kid. I'm just shocked at how dumb it (or maybe I) have become. Trev's was the best copy. Now, alas, unavailable. Some unforgettable images in this serial.

I received The Squadron's release of THE WOLF DOG, and watched four chapters, and it is vastly superior to other copies floating around. No splices, and a nice sharp print. Not mint perfect, but I give it an 8.

Thanks, Pa. I will update that entry. And I will definitely pick up the Squadron release, too. I don't have that one, glad I don't have to waste time/money upgrading it.
