. Eric is a thief, a liar, and a crook. Screw him.

Other than that, what do you think of him? :D

Just to toss some other companies into the mix...

The Lone Defender: Very nice, a solid 7. No extras. From Grapevine Video on one DVD-R.

King of the Rocket Men: Oddly, the opening credits for each chapter are maybe a 6, but the serial itself is an 8 for picture and sound. Two DVD-Rs from Cheezy Flicks. Extras include the trailer and a plethora of very poor quality snack bar ads.

Nyoka and the Tigermen (Perils of Nyoka): Gorgeous offering on 2 DVD-Rs from AC Comics. Includes over 100 photos, a pair of slide shows running over 11 minutes total, of stills, lobby cards, promo material, and Jungle Girl comic books. A nine easily, and I'm savin' the 10s for something that's perfect.

This does beg the question though, and I promise, I'm not trying to stir the pot. This is a legitimate question.

Why is it okay for me to buy from Cheezy Flix or AC Comics when I know full well that Paramount owns the rights to the Republic serials, and if anyone was actually licensed to sell them it would be Olive? Aren't Cheezy Flix and AC Comics basically selling fancy bootlegs with UPC codes on the cases?

I don't understand the question. Do you not know what the "grey market" is?

Sure I do. I'm just trying to figure out why Company A is okay, but Company B isn't, when they're basically doing the same thing. Company A just has distribution agreements to get in record stores and the like.

Again, I'm not being snarky. It's just something I've often wondered.

I'll add a follow up question:

Why buy a DVD from Company A for $25 when you can take your Republic VHS tape and make your own DVD-R that'll be the same quality, except without the bonus features and cool packaging?

I'm still not sure I understand. Grey market is supplying films you can't purchase over the counter in official releases. You want to buy a copy of AC's Don Daredevil and burn copies for your friends, go ahead. I don't care. Burn copies to re-sell? You're a dick. Trev masters discs and does a lot of work. Steal that and you're a BIG dick.

One Balconeer once recommended a site that was selling burned copies of Warner Archive discs for ten bucks. That guy's a crook.

I support companies legitimately releasing vintage films. When The Invisible Monster comes out from Olive, grey markets should better outta stop selling it.

Did I answer your question?

I added the The Lone Defender, King of the Rocket Men and Nyoka and the Tigermen (Perils of Nyoka) info.

I will leave The Lone Ranger rating at 7 for now, unless enough people think it is only a 6.

Most serials are not in the public domain, moody. You can thank Sonny Bono for that. They belong to companies that won't reissue them because there's no money in it. Instead, they use them as collateral to make loans for more potentially profitable ventures.

Just so you know.

Great PR skills, Mr. G.
I wondered how all that works. Many of the sights that sell old movies and serials have a notice saying they are in the public domain, and that if anyone claims to still own the rights to them, notify them and they will quit selling them. I wonder if they just post that to look legitimate, or if they think that is how it actually works?

Both. It's done to look legit, and also because if they get a cease and desist letter, they will remove the titles.

So if someone owns a movie that they wont make copies of to sell, you buy them from someone who went ahead and made a copy without permission, and thats grey market. Thats ok. To copy that copy yourself and sell is stealing. However, if the person who is made the copy, has "stolen" it from another copy maker, or screwed you over, then it is ok to "steal" his stuff and not be thought of as a thief yourself. I had no idea how all this worked. I have just gotten online and ordered movies. I am very naive to all this. The rules governing old movies and serials is very confusing. Someone needs to write a book with all this in it. :-/

The Cheezy Flix Monster and the Ape is probably a 6. It's a VHS transfer (which I heard was bought at a Western film convention in North Carolina, but I suspect Fred Shay's print is the source) that they cropped the blurry lines off of the bottom of the screen.

Extras include a trailer, but I didn't watch it so I don't know if it looks any good.

Moodyhound, you need to learn to read and to stop putting words in my mouth. You're starting to piss me off.

The biggest thing that pisses me off: I never, ever said it's "okay" to steal from Eric. I said I ENCOURAGE you to steal from him. Why? Because no matter how big a dick you are (and I'm beginning to glean that you're a very big dick, frankly), he's a bigger one.

Alas, I have never owned any of the Republic VHS tapes, nor do I have the equipment to transfer a VHS to DVD. So, for me, that is my only route.

Thanks, Rodney. Would you say the Cheezy Flix version of MONSTER AND THE APE is the best available at this moment?

I wasn't putting words in anyones mouth. I never said who said what, I was just stating how I understood things to be. If I misunderstood, you might just say so, rather than resort to childish name calling. I always try to question something I don't understand, so that I may understand it correctly. Obviously, the correct path would have been for me to just blindly agree, or at least not question things I don't understand. You have my apologies, I now have a better understanding of how things work around here.
